Jason Weber doesn't mind laying flat on his back, as long as he's in a pool and not a hospital bed. The opportunity to swim the 200-meter backstroke in the U.S. Olympic trials in Indianapolis next week is nothing short of a breath of fresh air for the Brown University junior, who vividly recalls a scary episode during his freshman season. After going to swim practice, the Westlake High graduate was walking back to his room when he began having trouble breathing.

Leo Klemm, who has won more than 200 games, resigned from his basketball coaching position at St. Monica High after 12 seasons. Klemm said Wednesday he has accepted a coaching and administrative position with a high school in Indiana. Klemm compiled a record of 203-109 and led the Mariners to the Southern Section semifinals four times at the upper division level. The Mariners won the Division IV-A championship in 1991.

Travis Taylor, a Crescenta Valley High senior, finished third in the Speedo Junior Championships West boys' 400-meter freestyle race Friday at Cal State Bakersfield. Taylor timed 4:03.67. He finished sixth in the 1,500-meter freestyle, in which he timed 16:15.23 on Saturday night, and he anchored Rose Bowl Aquatics' 800-free relay team, which included Falcon junior William Ban, and finished sixth in 7:55.78.

The third time was the charm for Phil Sheng of Thousand Oaks, who upset top-seeded Anders Oding of Royal, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2, to win the Marmonte League singles championship Thursday afternoon at Agoura High. The third-seeded Sheng lost to Oding twice during the league season but wound up handing the Swedish exchange student his first loss of the season. Seventh--seeded Mike Mancini and Andrew Gold of Camarillo won the doubles title with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Brad Wong and Albert Kim of Westlake.

Crescenta Valley High broke six Pacific League swimming records and won its fifth consecutive league title Friday at Arcadia High. Sophomore Kenny Carpenter set league records in the 100-yard butterfly (51:34) and 100 backstroke (53.88) for the Falcons. Steve Kim set a league record in the 200 freestyle, finishing in 1:44.56, and Evan Robb set the standard in the 200 individual medley, timing 1:56.65.

Seven foreign oil workers--including four Americans--kidnapped in October in Ecuador's petroleum-rich northeastern jungle were freed Thursday. An oil industry source said a $13-million ransom was paid. Ecuador's Defense Ministry said the men, who included a Chilean, an Argentine and a New Zealander, were released before noon and picked up by a military patrol. President Gustavo Noboa's office said they were "in good condition."

Amy Jones, The Times' regional girls' swimmer of the year from Cleveland High, finished second in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:05.32 at the Speedo Junior Championships West meet Thursday night at Cal State Bakersfield. Keiko Amano of Buenaventura Swim Club, a junior at Villanova Prep, finished fourth in the girls' 200 freestyle in 2:055.97. Aron Gyuris, of Thousand Oaks High and Conejo Simi Aquatics, was fifth in the boys' 100 freestyle in 53.31 seconds on Wednesday.

Five years ago, Crescenta Valley High came out of nowhere to win the Southern Section Division II boys' swimming title with just two individual qualifiers. Since then, the Falcons have consistently been a threat in Division II, but haven't won another team championship. That could change Saturday night because the Falcons, with 10 individual qualifiers, are a favorite in the Division II finals at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.
