Of all the delirious UCLA players celebrating a 23-20 victory over third-ranked Michigan on Saturday in searing 110-degree heat at the Rose Bowl, no one had earned the moment of pure elation more than free safety Jason Zdenek. From the time he was one of the last recruits in Coach Bob Toledo's first recruiting class of 1996, Zdenek has been buried at the bottom of the Bruins' depth chart. He wasn't as lowly as a walk on, but people paid more attention to the managers than to him.

It was payback time for Chaminade High. The Eagles (5-0) posted a 36-16 nonleague victory over Bloomington on Friday night, avenging last season's 72-14 loss. "Last year's loss meant everything to us," Chaminade quarterback Jason Zdenek said. "That was the most humiliating game I ever played in." Zdenek attempted only two passes Friday but made big plays anyway. He scored touchdowns on a 65-yard punt return and an 87-yard interception return.

So far freshmen have worn school colors on a practice field, have stayed in a dormitory and have walked a bit, to get an idea that at least there is a UCLA campus. Sometimes it's hard to tell, when you're there on a football scholarship. "I remember that when I came here, until we started classes I didn't know there was a campus," quarterback Cade McNown said, remembering a year ago. "I didn't know there was anything beyond that stretch of grass over there."

The Eagles (9-0, 4-0 in league play) built a 35-0 halftime lead before removing the majority of their first-string offensive players and tacking on another score. "We opened things up with the pass and came back to the run and both worked," said Giovannettone, who finished with 85 yards in 11 carries.

The same thing that had Chaminade High nervous in the first half enabled the Eagles to stage a second-half comeback and defeat El Camino Real, 38-10, in a nonleague game Friday night at Chaminade High. That thing was turnovers. The Eagles used two interceptions by Jason Zdenek to spark a rally from a 10-7 halftime deficit and break the game open. "I owed those interceptions to my team," said Zdenek, who as a quarterback threw two interceptions that led to El Camino Real scores.
