— George Karl's outfit Saturday was only the second most unexpected sight in the Pepsi Center in a 24-hour span. Headed to a Kentucky Derby party, the Denver Nuggets' coach wore white pants and white shoes paired with an orange-and-white striped shirt and a Carolina blue tie. And then there was the piece de resistance , a peach jacket with orange and blue pocket squares. "Someone bet me $1,000 I wouldn't wear it," Karl said, smiling. Karl's fashion statement still took a backseat to the look-at-me declarations Denver big men JaVale McGee and Kenneth Faried had made Friday during the Nuggets' 99-84 victory over the Lakers in Game 3 of their Western Conference first-round series.

In a loss to Houston on Monday, Wizards center JaVale McGee passed up a breakaway dunk. Instead, he bounced the ball off the backboard, caught it, then dunked. His coach, Flip Saunders , was upset: "That's unacceptable. Maybe I'm too old school. Save that for the All-Star game," he said. "We have some players that look for highlights instead of substance. " McGee, who finished second in last year's dunk contest, responded: "Apparently if …you're 1-11, you're not supposed to do stuff like that," he said.

For the second time this season, the Lakers (28-29) will visit the Denver Nuggets (35-23) on the second night of a back-to-back. The Lakers previously lost the day after Christmas in Denver after winning the first meeting at Staples Center on November 30. The Minnesota Timberwolves have nothing to gain this season, but plenty to lose. That's why they will not let their franchise forward, Kevin Love, return for the final two games despite the fact he has passed all concussion tests and been cleared by the NBA to return to the court. Love has been out since suffering a concussion and a strained neck during the April 11 game against Denver when Nuggets center Javale McGee accidentally elbowed him in the head while going up for a jumper.

Pau Gasol was finally seen on the Lakers' practice floor Wednesday after missing five games in the wake of a concussion suffered in a game last week. Coach Mike D'Antoni said the forward/center would go through a more strenuous workout later in the day, followed by additional testing.  If he is cleared, Gasol would be available Thursday night when the Lakers host the Miami Heat. D'Antoni said he wasn't sure whether he would need to ease the veteran back into the lineup.  Earl Clark has started two games in Gasol's absence, impressing D'Antoni with his energy, athleticism and versatility.

Pau Gasol still hasn't been cleared for basketball activity. The Lakers forward-center has been out with a concussion since taking a JaVale McGee arm to the nose on Jan. 6 during a loss to the Denver Nuggets. Gasol will be reevaluated before the Lakers battle the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday at Staples Center. Assuming Gasol is sidelined, Coach Mike D'Antoni will continue to go with Earl Clark, who suddenly becomes even more important to the team with Jordan Hill lost for the season because of a hip injury.
