Paramount Pictures had to wait a few extra months for Martin Scorsese to deliver a final cut of his upcoming "The Wolf of Wall Street," but a new trailer for the film indicates the delay may have been worth it. The studio this week confirmed it was pushing the picture's release date from Nov. 15 to Christmas Day after Scorsese finally handed over a 165-minute version of the film. But any  last-minute scurrying wasn't evident from the film's new trailer, which compellingly conveys the movie's narrative.  "Wolf" is based on the real-life story of Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio)

Sometimes it seems like Leonardo DiCaprio is just working his way backward through the 20th century. After all, he played J. Edgar Hoover in 2011, starred as Jay Gatsby in May and now, per this Hollywood Reporter item , could tackle the role of Woodrow Wilson in a new film about the 28th president. (Throw in mid-century suburban ennui in “Revolutionary Road” and his modern-day real-life investor in the upcoming “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and the DiCaprio filmography looks a lot like a portrait of the last 100 years of American life.)

Leonardo DiCaprio couldn't quite give up the lavish lifestyle of Jay Gatsby. In the newly released trailer for "The Wolf of Wall Street," we see similar themes in the stories, though "Wolf" is set in the 1990s, about 70 years after the Roaring '20s world of "Gatsby. " The film, directed by Martin Scorsese, follows Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio), a fast-talking money-hungry 26-year-old financier, who boldly says in the trailer, "The year I turned 26, I made $49 million, which really pissed me off because it was three shy of a million a week.

Leonardo DiCaprio is one of a handful of actors who have portrayed F. Scott Fitzgerald's tragic protagonist “The Great Gatsby” in film and TV over the last 87 years. Warner Baxter, who won the best actor Oscar as the Cisco Kid in the 1929 western “In Old Arizona,” played the role of Jay Gatsby in the lavish 1926 adaptation directed by Herbert Brenon. The advertising tag line for the film declared: “The Picture is the Dramatic Thunderbolt of the Season.” The film was released shortly after a theatrical adaptation opened on Broadway, with James Rennie as Gatsby.

Oscar Wilde wrote that moderation is a fatal thing, and Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann would seem to agree. Lurhmann, the director of such films as "Romeo + Juliet" and "Moulin Rouge!" is known for his visual flair, lavish production design and extensive pop culture sampling. His latest project has provided him with an expansive canvas for all three: a glittering big-screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" - in 3-D, no less. Set in the world of the wealthy elites of Jazz Age New York, "Gatsby" would seem ripe for the full Luhrmann treatment, but according to many reviewers, the film ultimately comes off much like the people it portrays: stylish but shallow.

F. Scott Fitzgerald's ambition for "The Great Gatsby" was scarcely modest: "Something new - something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned," the novelist wrote to his editor of his plans for the 1925 novel. Tobey Maguire, who stars as narrator Nick Carraway in director Baz Luhrmann's big-screen adaptation of the classic, said the Australian filmmaker's goal was no less cheeky. "Baz set out to do something very much like that," Maguire said. You could safely strike the word "simple" from Luhrmann's plans, though.

NEW YORK -- Women in bob cuts and extensive hair plumage and men in bowties and exaggerated facial expressions were dancing and throwing their arms in the air, 1920's style, amid the crowd of Manolo-clad partygoers, who were eating seafood hors d'oeuvres and snapping photos with their iPhones. It was a fitting set of contrasts Wednesday at the Plaza Hotel and its premiere party for Baz Luhrmann's 3-D version of “The Great Gatsby.” A few hours earlier at Lincoln Center, a similar dichotomy played out on screen, where Jay Gatsby's West Egg was exactingly re-created--with the help of some 21st century hip-hop and "Avatar"-style  technology--in Luhrmann's spin on the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic.

The 1949 version of "The Great Gatsby," which screens tonight at UCLA Melnitz Theater as part of the Paramount series, plays like a terse, film noir -ish '40s melodrama. And its interior scenes seem to owe more to the Owen Davis stage adaptation than to F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel.
