These are dramatic and changing times in which we live. Certainly with Gorbachev in the U.S.S.R. talking glasnost and SMRR in the People's Republic of Santa Monica talking in conciliatory tones of vacancy decontrol, times have changed, and there is a new wind blowing. In U.S.S.R., Gorbachev has, for years, been a good party Communist. In Soviet Monica, we now have Jay Johnson, who has worked as a very staunch liberal for years. Jay Johnson is the newly appointed Rent Control Board Commissioner.

A man who said he became driven to kill after contracting the AIDS virus admitted shooting to death two gay men. Jay Thomas Johnson, 24, pleaded guilty Wednesday to murder in the 1991 slayings of former state Sen. John Chenoweth and Joel Larson. Under a plea bargain, Johnson will receive life in prison plus 15 years.

A Santa Paula boy accused of fatally beating a neighborhood couple with a bat during a home burglary last month appeared in Ventura County Superior Court on Tuesday but did not enter a plea. Attorney Jay Johnson told Judge Kevin McGee that he needed additional time to review charges of murder, robbery, burglary and joyriding against Adam Sarabia, 16. McGee ordered Sarabia back to court Nov. 13 for arraignment.

The young and the old will display their creative artwork, ceramics and photography today at an exhibit designed to close the generational gap and foster a good image of people living in nursing homes. Work by artists ranging in age from 104-year-old Florence Alsberge to 5-year-olds at the Conejo Adventist Elementary School will be hanging at the Ventura Estates Retirement and Health Care Center, 915 Estates Drive, from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

Matt LoVecchio threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns and Tony Driver scored twice on fumble returns Saturday as Notre Dame beat Navy, 45-14, for its 37th straight victory in college football's longest continuous intersectional rivalry. LoVecchio threw scoring passes of 11 yards to Dan O'Leary and 32 yards to Tony Fisher before being replaced by Gary Godsey, whose 46-yard scoring pass to Jay Johnson finished the rout at the Florida Citrus Bowl.

It took Laguna Hills all of one quarter to get its offense going. When it did, the Hawks gave La Puente an early exit from the Southern Section Division VIII playoffs. Quarterback Cory Pardoe passed for 110 yards and three touchdowns and running back Mike Jones gained 194 yards in a 28-0 first-round victory Friday at Mission Viejo High. The Hawks (10-1) won their 10th consecutive game with their second shutout in a row. They are at Temescal Canyon next week.

Sonora High School scored two second-quarter touchdowns against Dana Hills and held on for a 14-7 nonleague victory in La Habra Stadium Friday night. Dana Hills took the early lead on Keith Coley's three-yard run in the first quarter. Sonora, held to just 35 yards total offense in the first quarter, tied the score on quarterback Ron Lesperance's five-yard keeper midway through the second quarter.

Mike Jones rushed for three touchdowns and 250 yards in 32 carries as Laguna Hills crushed Costa Mesa, 41-0, in a Pacific Coast League game Thursday night at Mission Viejo High School. With the victory, the Hawks (9-1, 5-0) finish undefeated in league. After a scoreless first quarter, quarterback Cory Pardoe opened scoring for Laguna Hills with an 11-yard touchdown run. Jones later scored the first of his touchdowns on a two-yard run, giving the Hawks a 14-0 lead.
