May I take this opportunity to applaud your article? I attended the Miss Anaheim Scholarship Pageant, along with my daughter, a former professional entertainer. We both applauded the selection of Jill Niemela as Miss Anaheim. Indeed her talent was outstanding. However, we sat stunned as the runners-up were announced. The outstanding talent, poise, and beauty that Lynne Lochrie presented were apparently not enough.

The late voodoo soul singer Screamin' Jay Hawkins once boasted of having fathered more than 75 children around the world. When none of them showed up at his funeral in Paris last year, biographer Maral Nigolian searched for them via the Internet (www.jayskids.com)--an effort, she insists, that turned up around 35 of the "Hawkins 75."

Screamin' Jay Hawkins, the legendary R&B singer renowned for his ferocious shrieking on his '50s single "I Put a Spell on You," sure has a strange way of promoting his new album. "I don't like a lot of the stuff on it," he says, sitting at a corner table in a Sunset Boulevard restaurant. "At the Palomino (where Hawkins headlines Saturday night), I'll do the fast, rap version of 'Put a Spell on You' from the album, but not much else from it."
