Beyonce's steamy performance at the Grammy Awards may as well have been an advertisement for marriage. Clad in a sheer bodysuit, the “Drunk in Love” singer was certainly seducing the audience, but there was no doubt she was singing for her husband Jay Z as well. When he joined her on stage toward the end of the song, the effect was palpable. Not only does the romance stay alive after tying the knot and having a baby but, they seemed to be saying, the attraction intensifies . There appeared to be another message too as the two superstars joined together into one force: It's possible to cherish your independence while being an equal partner in your marriage.

The push to bring a major music festival to downtown Los Angeles - one with rapper Jay Z expected to play a creative role - has set off a tussle between two L.A. politicians. Los Angeles City Councilman Jose Huizar contends he was left out of discussions, spearheaded by Mayor Eric Garcetti in recent weeks, over bringing the two-day Budweiser Made in America music festival to Grand Park and the nearby steps of City Hall. Huizar, who represents most of downtown, called for the city to withhold approval of any permits for the Labor Day weekend event until the details are properly vetted.

Jay-Z is a great American artist — and he'd be the first to tell you so. "Decoded" is an elegantly designed, incisively written bid for cultural legitimacy by a man whose XXL ego is underscored by an equally outsized inferiority complex (as big egos so often are). To Jay-Z's credit, this hip-hop art book is not just one man's memoir. It's also a passionate defense of a musical form that's often as misunderstood as this complicated spokesman. Just as it's hit the economic skids, hip-hop has a champion on a rescue mission.

AUSTIN, Texas - Video images of fierce predatory animals flashed across several gigantic screens behind Jay Z and Kanye West at the Austin Music Hall on Wednesday night, a visual holdover from the rappers' collaborative tour in 2011 but also, it seemed, a kind of warning to the South by Southwest music festival they'd dropped in to dominate. Attract as many superstars as you like, the footage appeared to say - we'll devour them all. Once a forum for undiscovered regional talent, SXSW has become irresistible in recent years to A-list acts eager for a concentrated audience of gatekeepers and tastemakers.

Kanye West may believe he is a god, but somehow Jay Z just upped him in the ontological battle over each's greatness. This particular flame war started in 2012, when singer and longtime civil rights activist Harry Belafonte told the Hollywood Reporter that " I think one of the great abuses of this modern time is that we should have had such high-profile artists, powerful celebrities," he said. "But they have turned their back on social responsibility. That goes for Jay-Z and Beyonce, for example.

Last summer Timbaland revealed he had been tapped to produce a new posthumous Michael Jackson album. The Grammy award-winning producer and rapper didn't offer many details, except the project was being helmed by Epic Records head L.A. Reid and that he had “a lot of unreleased” material to work with. As part of his Timbaland Thursday series of free tunes, the producer unleashed a snippet of a remixed version of “Slave to the Rhythm.” A version of the previously unreleased track surfaced last year featuring Justin Bieber trading verses with the late King of Pop over a pulsating, and generic, Europop beat.

And while Jay Z led the field with nine nominations, he's not the major story line Pop & Hiss will be watching.  Instead, the big story of the 2014 Grammy Awards is looking to be Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. The act already has three major Grammys, including rap album for "The Heist. " In Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' win, local rapper Kendrick Lamar and open-hearted rapper Drake were overlooked.

After two high-profile incidents of young African Americans being questioned after shopping at Barneys, Jay Z's forthcoming collection for the luxury retailer arrives at an awkward time . Hov's new high-end fashion line for the department store, which debuts Nov. 20, includes a $70 T-shirt and a nearly $34,000 watch. But if several recent high-profile incidents are a sign, the young, hip-hop savvy shopper the line is geared toward might find that purchasing the items could be very unpleasant.

Maybe it was all the Daft Punk disco energy in the air, but this year's Grammy crowd was its most spirited in years.  Whether it was Keith Urban getting teary during Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Same Love" marriage ceremony or Taylor Swift freaking at out at Kendrick Lamar's drum circle with Imagine Dragons, what's usually a semi-formal ceremony turned into an actual dance party inside Staples Center. In the front rows, Jay Z and Beyonce acted as a kind of litmus test for the night's sets - if they got to their feet, you did your work.
