Luke Bryan made the invite, and fans responded. The country star's "Crash My Party" landed at No. 1 on the U.S. pop charts this week and caused quite the celebration in doing so.  "Crash My Party" sold 528,000 copies for the week ending Aug. 18, according to the Nielsen SoundScan stats that constitute the Billboard charts . That's the largest debut week for a male country artist in almost nine years, Billboard reports. One has to go all the way back to 2004 to Tim McGraw's "Live Like You Were Dying," which bowed with 766,000 copies sold, to find a better country entry from an artist not named Taylor Swift.

Today comes word from the folks over at Yahoo that searches for the name "Tom Ford" have spiked 155% in the last month and that the search engine's queries for the fashion designer's name are up ninefold in 2013 compared with the same time last year. In this morning's "what's spiking" email, Yahoo Web trends expert Carolyn Clark suggests the spike could have something to do with Jay Z's song "Tom Ford" (sample lyric: "I don't pop molly, I rock Tom Ford") off the album "Magna Carta Holy Grail," which was released in early July.

Was it really a performance-art event, or just a glorified plug for his new album?  Probably some of both. In July, hip-hop artist Jay Z took over New York's Pace Gallery for several hours to stage a marathon version of "Picasso Baby," a single from his album "Magna Carta... Holy Grail," which was released last month. The singer billed the gallery event as a performance-art piece, and the crowd included artist Marina Abramovic, director Judd Apatow and actors Alan Cumming, Rosie Perez and Taraji P. Henson.

Who? Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake and 60,000 fans. When? Sunday. Where? The Rose Bowl. The inevitable? Hellish parking. To preempt some of the traffic snarls at the sold out Legends of the Summer concert, Rose Bowl officials are asking people to show up several hours early and Metro is keeping most of its rail lines open late to accommodate the post-concert masses. “This is a huge operation,” said Metro spokesman Jose Ubaldo. “I don't think we've had a celebrity like Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z doing this together.

Kanye West may believe he is a god, but somehow Jay Z just upped him in the ontological battle over each's greatness. This particular flame war started in 2012, when singer and longtime civil rights activist Harry Belafonte told the Hollywood Reporter that " I think one of the great abuses of this modern time is that we should have had such high-profile artists, powerful celebrities," he said. "But they have turned their back on social responsibility. That goes for Jay-Z and Beyonce, for example.

All of us who enjoy watching South Carolina super-stud Jadeveon Clowney play (and plow) are relieved to know his season is not going to be derailed for illegal targeting by some rapper. Clowney is, knuckles down, the nation's best defensive player and a key cog in South Carolina's BCS hopes this season. There were concerns the defensive end might have broken NCAA rules by talking to superstar rapper Jay-Z, who now fancies himself a sports agent looking to represent future No. 1 overall choices in the NFL draft.

Jay's 12 th  solo effort continues a hot streak of rap albums consecutively topping the chart, starting with Jay's collaborator/friend Kanye West early last month.  Recent efforts from Wale and J. Cole knocked one another off before Jay's album debuted.

In the past week Justin Timberlake launched his Legends of Summer stadium tour with Jay Z (they play the Rose Bowl on July 28) and premiered a new single, “Take Back the Night,” the lead track from Part 2 of his uber-successful comeback album, “The 20/20 Experience.” “Take Back the Night,” a disco cut that could have cleanly fit on Michael Jackson's “Off the Wall,” got us wondering what exactly Timberlake plans on offering with...
