About 100 eateries will be participating in Restaurant Week Aug. 23-30, offering three-course, fixed-price meals that also help fight hunger. Most of the restaurants participating in Restaurant Week are on or near the Las Vegas Strip, making it ideal for tourists. Among the many choices: Alize on the 56 th floor of the Palms : Besides its superb view, Alize, a fine French restaurant, will be serving a special meal priced at $50.13 per person. Jean Georges Steakhouse at Aria : The acclaimed chef whose name is on the door has created a special menu for $50.13.

Las Vegas has gained a few pounds in the last year - at least 1.5 million, actually. Some of it is fat; some of it fleshy; all of it is delightful. The “it" in this case is Certified Angus Beef, and “it” is the entrée that has driven a steak into Sin City's heart. That 1.5 million figure represents the increase in just one year in the amount of that beef delivered to Vegas. That brings to 5 million pounds the amount of the prized beef finding its way into the gullets of gamblers and others.

Hotel-casino Aria, the Cesar Pelli-designed centerpiece of Las Vegas' $8.5-billion CityCenter, has opened, along with restaurants from chefs such as Masa Takayama, Shawn McClain, Michael Mina and Jean-Georges Vongerichten. Directly off Aria's lobby is Takayama's Japanese restaurant Bar Masa, designed by Richard Bloch, with a three-story high entrance and seating for 256. (Shaboo, the more intimate shabu-shabu restaurant located inside Bar Masa, is set to open this weekend.

How many high-end restaurants can Vegas support, particularly in this economy? Easily a dozen more just opened in the new $11-billion CityCenter complex on the Strip and a number of them definitely have enough wow factor to pull in the hungry tourists. Admittedly, the planning for CityCenter began long before the slump, still, here comes Michelin three-star Paris chef Pierre Gagnaire joining his illustrious (and extravagantly starred) colleagues Joel Robuchon, Alain Ducasse and Guy Savoy in a gamblers' paradise.
