If Monday night was Cher's, Tuesday night was Sonny's. A day after his ex-wife and former singing partner was recognized as best actress at the Academy Awards ceremonies, Sonny Bono was elected mayor of the desert resort community of Palm Springs by a comfortable margin. With all the ballots counted Tuesday night, Bono was at the top of the heap with 4,842 votes, compared to his closest rival, accountant Lloyd Maryanove, who got 3,498.

Jean Grace spent 50 years of her life thinking she was the only biological child of the couple who reared her. Michael Pompilii always knew he was adopted but did not learn he had a sibling until he was more than 40 years old. It took them a long time to find each other -- Grace searched for eight years, Pompilii nearly 20. But now the biological siblings -- Grace, 59, lives in Coram, N.Y., while Pompilii, 62, is in Brooklyn -- talk twice a day on the telephone.

Albert J. Langer, founder of Langer's Delicatessen-Restaurant, whose succulent hand-cut pastrami on hot rye bread, topped with Gulden's mustard, won praise as the finest hot pastrami sandwich in America -- or the world, depending on the critic -- died Sunday in Agoura from complications of old age. He was 94. Langer's Delicatessen marked its 60th anniversary nearly two weeks ago with a celebration that included accolades for the deli's food and its survival.

Jimmy "Baby Face" McLarnin, a two-time welterweight boxing champion in an era when each weight division had only one titleholder, has died. He was 96. McLarnin died Oct. 28 at a nursing home in Richland, Wash. The cause of death was not reported. McLarnin, also known as the Belfast Spider, had victories over 21 champions or future titleholders in a career that stretched from 1923 to 1936.

In the beginning, the FBI believed that it was investigating a routine case of art theft. One of Carmel's largest art galleries had reported several paintings missing from its walls, and two agents arrived to take a report. They debriefed the staff and then segued to the showroom filled with thundering seascapes and bucolic scenes of French villages. That's when the surprises began.

I am a new resident of Orange County, having arrived from the East Coast after the county had declared bankruptcy. Since I by choice elect to remain here, even though I was not part of the problem, I must be part of the solution. I certainly agree that a tax increase to Orange County residents is called for, since the county's elected representatives caused and presided over its financial downfall, and I have no problem with the idea of paying a tax increase. My problem is with the nature of such an increase.

Here is the complete list of nominees for the 47th annual nighttime Emmy Awards, as announced Thursday by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The academy said additional nominations are scheduled to be released Aug. 7 for six more categories where balloting was described as incomplete. They include best informational series, best writing in a comedy series and best directing for a drama series.

Each day, a small throng of tourists gathers near the intersection of 5th Avenue and San Carlos Street in Carmel, auto-focus cameras slung around their necks and self-conscious grins fixed on their faces. These days, however, their concentration centers not on Clint Eastwood's restaurant, the Hog's Breath Inn, but on a small, inconspicuous, gray-stucco storefront next door.
