Her mother, June, had commissioned a mural that would cover all four walls, and Rebecca was calling the shots. The artist, a Huntington Beach resident whose caricatures of world leaders have appeared in the International Herald Tribune, the New York Times, the Washington Post and U.S.

Under The Stars The Grove Shakespeare Festival hosted a party and poetry reading at the Festival's Garden Grove amphitheater on Monday, raising an estimated $20,000 through ticket sales and donations, according to managing director Barbara Hammerman. About 185 people paid $125 each for cocktails and a gourmet dinner served in a courtyard across from the theater, then moved across the park at dusk to hear selections from the Bard's rhymes and rages.

A new multicultural theater troupe called Cucucuevez is being formed in Orange County and will present the world premiere of Garden Grove playwright Roy Conboy's comedy, "Buscando America," as its first production in August. The 39-year-old Conboy, who will be the artistic director, said Friday that the troupe "will be established for the long term" by a group of about 15 writers, directors and performers representing "Latinos, Anglos and Asians."

Perhaps the Seattle hotel clerk who took David Ross' reservation over the phone believes that all Southern Californians are diet fanatics. Whatever, Ross, who lives on Granada Avenue in Long Beach, noticed that his hotel receipt listed the name of his street as: "Granola." Hardly anyone's immune from the slump in the economy, not even the Elysium nudist colony in Topanga.

Howard Subnick's watches not only tell time, they make political statements. As president of the Political Time Co. in Huntington Beach, Subnick creates watches with Bush, Gorbachev and other political figures on their dials accompanied by a timely message. His George Bush watch, for instance, has this to say to America's friends in the Middle East: "Up Your Oil Well." In answer to critics of Dan Quayle, Subnick has a "No Quayle hunting" wristwatch with the likeness of the vice president.
