A year ago, Jeannette Fylpaa of University High School began her prep tennis career spectacularly. She compiled a 45-3 record and advanced to the round of 16 in the Southern Section singles championships, a feat that surprised even her. Only one other Orange County player, Corona del Mar's Keri Phebus, made it that far. And if it hadn't been for Phebus, who also was a freshman, Fylpaa probably would have gotten more attention.

Jeannette Fylpaa, No. 1 singles player at University High and one of the top players in the county, Monday signed a letter of intent to attend Nevada Las Vegas on a tennis scholarship, University Coach Karen Speros said. Fylpaa, a four-year varsity player, was 45-3 overall this season and undefeated in Sea View League matches. She'll play Saturday in the qualifying round of the Southern Section individual championships at Huntington Beach High.

In Division 5-A girls' volleyball: University 3, Dana Hills 0--Shelby Samuelsen had 19 kills and Holiday Molway added 12 for host University (10-8), which advances to play Laguna Beach (18-2) Thursday. Dana Hills finished 6-10. In Division 4-A girls' tennis: Irvine 11, University 7--Traci Drayer and Jinna Uh swept at No. 2 doubles, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2, for host Irvine (12-4) in a wild-card match. Jeannette Fylpaa swept at No. 1 singles for University, 6-3, 6-0, 6-3.

Tony Gonzalez, an all-county forward from Huntington Beach High, scored 16 points to help the Orange County all-star team defeat South Dakota, 77-67, in the 20th Nike National Prep Basketball Championship Saturday at Las Vegas. More than 100 teams from around the country are competing in the tournament, which conclude with the finals next Saturday.

The La Quinta High School water polo team equaled its victory total of last season when the Aztecs (2-0) defeated Santa Ana, 16-5, Monday at Santa Ana. Zac Wood scored seven goals for La Quinta, which took the lead early and never gave it up. The second string took over in the fourth quarter. Goalie Steve Fairchild had 12 saves. In girls' nonleague tennis: Capistrano Valley 17, Foothill 1--Only the No. 3 doubles team lost a set as the Cougars won at Foothill. Capistrano Valley is 2-0.

Jason Bird's three goals led Brea-Olinda High School to an 8-5 victory over Montebello in a nonleague water polo game Wednesday at Brea-Olinda. Matt Priess had 13 saves to lead Brea-Olinda (8-2). Montebello is 6-4. In other nonleague water polo: La Serna 16, Canyon 9--Joey Mindlow scored six for host La Serna. David Kasa scored four goals for Canyon (13-6).

Midway through her match with Michelle Berkowitz, one of the top singles players in Orange County, some vocal Fountain Valley students showed up to support Berkowitz.

Amanda Parson finished her regular season unbeaten by sweeping her singles sets in Foothill's 16-2 victory over El Modena in a Century League girls' tennis match Wednesday at El Modena. Parson, a senior, improved her singles record to 57-0, 30-0 in league play, by winning 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. The Knights (15-4, 10-0) won their second consecutive league title. El Modena freshman Brandi Freudenberg, who lost to Parson, 6-7, in the teams' first match, didn't play Wednesday.

Chris Lynch of Laguna Hills won the Pacific Coast League boys' cross-country title and the Hawks took the team title Friday at Irvine Park in Orange. Lynch finished the three-mile course in 15 minutes 12 seconds as Laguna Hills placed five runners in the top 10, finishing with 27 points. Estancia had 67 and Century had 77. Adam Ripley of Laguna Beach finished second in 15:27, and Dave Burnette of Laguna Hills finished third in 15:36.
