When Jeff Bennett--a veteran street cop and neophyte lawyer--first showed up at the Ventura County district attorney's office, he applied only as an investigator to get his foot in the door. He didn't get a second look. "They said I wasn't qualified," he recalled. Now just seven years later, Bennett, 39, directs the same 75-person investigative bureau he could not penetrate as a seasoned officer.

Corona Councilman Jeff Bennett filed a complaint Tuesday with the state Fair Political Practices Commission over what he called a "hit piece" campaign mailer sent to city residents by an obscure Los Angeles political organization. The glossy four-page mailer, which criticizes Bennett's ethics, arrived in residents' mailboxes last week alongside absentee ballots.

Rescue volunteers abandoned their search for Jeff Bennett, 40, of Agoura, who has been missing for about two weeks in the Santa Susana Mountains. The California Highway Patrol found Bennett's pickup truck Jan. 13 on Rocky Peak Road near the Simi Valley Freeway. Bennett's wallet and keys were in the truck. About 45 members of the Citizens Emergency Mobile Patrol, a volunteer organization based in Northridge, combed the area Saturday but found no clue to Bennett's whereabouts.

A fast-food worker was arrested Thursday night for allegedly selling methamphetamine from the drive-through window of a Jack-In-The-Box restaurant on North Citrus Avenue. Jennifer Dominguez, 23, who worked the graveyard shift, was arrested in her car with baggies of the stimulant, said Sheriff's Det. Jeff Bennett. He said she was apparently under the influence of a drug. "She consented to a search of the house and they found more narcotics," Bennett said.

Two supporters of Hells Angels leader George Christie Jr. have offered to put up five properties in Northern and Southern California to help bail him out of jail pending trial on drug and racketeering charges. Defense lawyers declined to identify the two supporters or explain their connection to Christie, 54, who has been jailed in lieu of $1-million bail for seven months. A bail hearing on the source of money behind those properties was postponed until next week at the request of prosecutors.
