Wade Phillips succeeded retired Marv Levy as coach of the Buffalo Bills on Monday and made it clear the team has a long road back to the Super Bowl. "This isn't a Super Bowl team," Phillips said. "We have a big job to do, and we know that." The Bills were 6-10 this season. Sources said Phillips signed a four-year contract at $750,000-$800,000 a season. He immediately made linebacker coach Ted Cottrell his defensive coordinator.

San Francisco 49er running back Garrison Hearst, out since Nov. 30 because of a broken collarbone, practiced Wednesday for first time since his injury. "He looked good running straight ahead," San Francisco Coach Steve Mariucci said. Hearst, the 49ers' leading rusher, will undergo a bone scan today to determine whether the break has healed.

Pro Bowl defensive end Derrick Thomas was suspended for one game Tuesday and linebacker Wayne Simmons was waived, a day after Kansas City Chief owner Lamar Hunt said their actions "disgraced this organization as well as the community." Thomas, Simmons and defensive end Chester McGlockton drew five personal foul penalties in the final minutes of Denver's 30-7 victory.

With 300 meters to go in the boys' 3,200 meters at the Arcadia Invitational, Angel Martinez of San Gabriel High was ahead by 25 meters--but knew his lead was shrinking. He heard the crowd cheer as Theo Molla of Tuscon (Ariz.) University High closed to within five meters with 100 meters to go. Then, as quickly as Molla had closed, Martinez opened up again to win in 9 minutes 2.82 seconds compared to Molla's 9.04.81.

School: El Toro High Sport: Golf Position: No. 1 player Class: Sophomore Garner, the South Coast League champion last season as a freshman, hasn't let up a bit this year. Last week, he shot a cumulative three-under par in two South Coast League matches to help the Chargers to victories over Irvine and Dana Hills, which appear to be the Chargers' main competition in the league. Tuesday, Garner and his older brother, Joe, each shot three-under 33 in the victory over Irvine at Rancho San Joaquin.

Marion Jones of Rio Mesa High, who successfully defended her titles in the girls' 100 and 200 meters in the state track and field championships at Cerritos College last Saturday, will concentrate solely on the 200 in the inaugural National Scholastic outdoor championships that will be held today and Sunday at Birmingham High. The meet, which will include approximately 300 athletes from 29 states, will start today at 3 p.m. with trials in all events except for the two-mile.

With the game on the line, Mike Tomczak connected on one more pass than Dan Marino. Tomczak threw for 252 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown to Ernie Mills with 2:10 remaining, and the Pittsburgh Steelers rallied from an 11-point second-quarter deficit to beat the Miami Dolphins, 24-17, Monday night. Marino moved Miami 73 yards in the final two minutes to the 7-yard line, but his pass to Scott Miller on fourth and one with 25 seconds left fell incomplete in the end zone.

In other Canyon Softball Tournament games: Fountain Valley 2, Garden Grove 1--Rae Rice (5-0) pitched a four-hitter and struck out 10 for Fountain Valley (8-1). Canyon 2, La Habra 1--Sara Roberts (8-0) pitched a three-hitter and struck out 14 for Canyon (11-2). El Modena 2, Santa Margarita 1--Alexis Beckman (5-4) pitched a four-hitter and struck out four for El Modena (5-4). Beckman also doubled home one run and scored the winning run.

A week after coming .002 seconds short of a national best in the Arcadia Invitational, freshman Amy Skieresz anchored the Agoura High girls' 6,400-meter relay team to a state record Friday night at the Mt. San Antonio College relays. Senior Laura Hayward, sophomore Kay Nekota, junior Kristie Camp and Skieresz, who helped lead the Chargers to their second consecutive State cross-country title in November, combined to win in 20 minutes 29.
