How does a math teacher with no varsity coaching experience land the head coaching job at Garden Grove High School? Well, take a football program that had not made a playoff appearance in six years. Subtract a varsity coach who, coming off a 1-9 season, quits one week before the 1988 season. Add only 16 players out for varsity and factor in Jeff Buenafe, an exuberant, sincere math teacher with some athletic experience.

The mid-morning sun sizzled over the Garden Grove High School football stadium Saturday, turning the bright metal bleachers into a dizzying sheet of heat and glare. It was a nice place--for a broiled shrimp or a sunspot. But sitting there didn't seem to bother Jeff Buenafe. As a much-criticized football coach--but one who is 3-0 this year--he has gotten used to the heat that comes from these stands. Four years ago, Buenafe was a Garden Grove assistant on an 0-10 team.

Eddie Benson isn't a tailback of great size. In fact, at 5-7 and 160 pounds, he's kind of small. But Benson played a big part in Los Amigos High's 13-0 victory over Garden Grove Friday night in front of 2,500. Benson, a sophomore, stepped into the starting lineup at the beginning of the season after five starters transferred to other schools. Benson remained, and hasn't let his diminutive stature or inexperience dictate how he performs on the playing field.
