"There's been so much talk about the black journalist, about is this something that a black journalist can cover with a level of integrity, or are all black journalists just drinking the Kool-Aid, celebrating Barack Obama before he won," said Johnson, perched on a stool on a makeshift rooftop set overlooking the U.S. Capitol.

Jaclyn Johnson breaks into a wide smile anytime she talks about her return to the basketball court. The Bell-Jeff High senior forward has been one of the region's top players since she averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds a game as a Quartz Hill freshman and was named to The Times' All-Valley team. She continued making progress her sophomore season, then transferred to Bell-Jeff before her junior year to live with her aunt, then with her father.

Dave Murphy, executive vice president and general manager of the Los Angeles Times, will take over management of the newspaper's advertising department, Times Publisher Jeff Johnson said. Todd Brownrout, The Times' senior vice president of advertising since October 2004, will leave the company, Johnson said in a statement. Johnson said the change was made to "improve our speed to market and improve our customer and revenue development." Brownrout could not be reached for comment.

Village Christian 24, St. Genevieve 14--Jeff Johnson completed nine of 18 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another in the Crusaders' nonleague victory at Birmingham High. Clifford Rivera rushed for 93 yards and one touchdown in 14 carries for the Valiants (0-2). The Crusaders (2-0) took a 21-0 halftime lead and outgained St. Genevieve, 142-18. Danny Buhler rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown in seven carries for the Valiants.

Alan Christian of Huntington Beach won the scratch main event Friday at the Orange County Fairgrounds' weekly speedway program in front of a crowd of 6,581. Christian, who set a fairgrounds record by winning 11 consecutive scratch main events four years ago, finished in front of Sam Ermolenko of Cypress and John Sandona of Richey Canyon. Tom Burba of Garden Grove won the handicap main event, edging Mike Mazzacane of Riverside. Jeff Johnson of Bloomington won the second division main event.

Olympic Trials Fullerton's Kevin Kim advanced to today's singles and doubles finals in the USTA men's tournament in Aptos. Kim defeated Yong-Il Yoon of South Korea, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, in a singles semifinal, and teamed with Luke Smith of Australia to beat Robin Vik of the Czech Republic and Takahiro Terachi of Japan, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-2, in doubles.

Ray McCutcheon, senior vice president for advertising at the Los Angeles Times, is joining Tribune Media Net, the national ad sales group for Tribune Co., parent of The Times. McCutcheon, who came to The Times five years ago from Newsday, will serve as vice president of sales development when he begins the new assignment Sept. 7. "We're delighted to have an executive of Ray's caliber and experience joining Tribune Media Net," said Dave Murphy, president of Tribune Media Net.

Formal disciplinary charges have been lodged against two Lutheran congregations that violated denominational policy by ordaining three gay ministers who refuse to renounce sexual relations. St. Francis and First United churches face punishment ranging from censure to expulsion from the church organization for "willfully disregarding" membership requirements of the 5.2-million-member Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
