Jeff Jones, an assistant coach and former player at Virginia, will be named to succeed Terry Holland as head coach, two newspapers reported today. Virginia Athletic Director Jim Copeland reached his decision Saturday and is expected to announce the choice either today or Tuesday, the Roanoke Times & World-News and the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported. Jones, 29, could not be reached for comment Sunday night. When reached by phone Sunday night, Copeland said he would not comment on the reports.

Gap Inc. said Monday that it named advertising executive Jeff Jones head of marketing for its Gap stores, filling a post that has been vacant for more than a year as the company has tried to boost sales at its flagship chain. Jones, 36, will oversee marketing for Gap, GapKids, BabyGap and GapBody, the San Francisco-based retailer said.

Roxanne Jones, the Reseda woman who shot her three children to death as they slept and then turned the gun on herself, talked of killing herself and taking her children with her for as long as two months before carrying out the threat, police and acquaintances said Thursday. None of those who heard her discuss suicide took her seriously enough to contact authorities or to steer her toward counseling.

Shook was 2-6 with a 2.86 earned-run average this season. * Jeff Jones of Golden West College has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Long Beach State, his father, Ken, said.

Jeff Jones resigned as basketball coach at Virginia rather than be fired, Athletic Director Terry Holland said Monday, adding that the state of the program left him with no alternative. "All athletic programs are built on hope and the future and the ability to sell that future," Holland said. "And at this stage, we saw we could not do that any longer." The Cavaliers, coming off their worst season in 35 years, have been in decline since two freshmen were arrested on shoplifting charges in 1995.

A single mother, apparently despondent over the breakup of her marriage and her struggle to provide for her three children, shot them as they slept in the family's Reseda home, and then killed herself, police said Wednesday. The bodies of the woman and her children, along with the slain family dog, were found Wednesday afternoon by friends of the eldest daughter who broke into the house because they had not heard from the girl and feared something was wrong.
