A Municipal Court judge ordered an 18-year-old San Juan Capistrano man Tuesday to stand trial on charges of beating and attempting to kill a 55-year-old man during an alleged gay bashing in Laguna Beach. A second suspect in the case was formally charged in court Tuesday with aggravated assault and a hate crime violation in connection with the Jan. 9 beating on a rocky stretch of beach near three Laguna Beach gay bars.

An 18-year-old San Clemente High School student pleaded not guilty Thursday in Municipal Court here to charges that he beat up and attempted to kill a man during an alleged gay-bashing. Jeff Michael Raines also pleaded not guilty to inflicting great bodily injury and committing a hate crime. He is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing Feb. 2. Raines was one of three young men arrested Jan. 9 in connection with the beating of Loc Minh Truong, 55, of Costa Mesa.

As Laguna Beach police concluded their investigation into the beating of a 55-year-old man on a local beach, the second adult suspect in the case was released on $30,000 bail. Deputy Dist. Atty. Craig McKinnon said Wednesday that charges will be filed against Christopher Michael Cribbins, 22, of San Clemente by the end of the week. Cribbins posted bail Tuesday evening.

A 22-year-old San Clemente man pleaded not guilty Tuesday at his arraignment on charges of assaulting a man during what authorities claim was a gay bashing. Christopher Michael Cribbins was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and committing a hate crime in the Jan. 9 beating of Loc Minh Truong, 55, of Costa Mesa. Lugging two heavy gray bags, Eric Lampel delivered more than 3,000 letters to Superior Court Judge Everett W. Dickey Friday that urged the judge to order the maximum sentences for two men convicted of beating a Laguna Beach man they thought was gay. Lampel, an attorney, initiated the letter campaign in August, after the defendants pleaded guilty to all charges in the case, including commission of a hate crime.

Laguna Beach police arrested two additional suspects Monday in what they described as a gay-bashing and released the identity of the still-unconscious victim, a 55-year-old Vietnamese immigrant. Christopher Michael Cribbins, 22, of San Clemente has been arrested on suspicion of assault with great bodily harm and violating the city's hate crime law, police said.
