How long will society allow religious organizations to ruin the reputations of individuals, whose only mistake is to believe that these religious organizations believe in the "Word of God"? Alemany High girls' basketball Coach Melissa Hearlihy [lost] her job and was not given a reason. It seems that the Catholic archdiocese of Los Angeles believes that someone with money and power is more important to the Catholic church than the person who tries to educate the children of the Lord in the philosophy of the Lord.

With the demolition of the old auditorium, St. Genevieve High officially broke ground Sunday on the construction of a gymnasium, something the Catholic school has done without since it opened in 1959. But some parents and former St. Genevieve employees say it will take more than a bulldozer to dismantle the wall of bureaucracy that has surrounded the campus in recent years.

Westmark High of Encino, an eight-man program, has earned its first playoff berth in four years of football. The Lions were 4-3 in the regular season, including a 3-0 mark in Omega League play. The showing earned them a chance to play Price Christian in the first round of the Eight-Man Small Division playoffs at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran High, and the right to shave Coach Jeff Trovatten's head during a school assembly earlier this week. "They had a good time," Trovatten said.

Canyon High softball player, Crystl Bustos, The Times' 1994 Player of the Year, will miss the first month of the season because of academic ineligibility, Coach Greg Hayes said. Bustos, a shortstop, batted .573 with 10 home runs and 27 runs batted in last season. "I took some advanced-level classes this semester and fell below the 2.0 (grade-point average) I needed to be eligible," Bustos said. Said Hayes: "This wasn't a case of her slacking off.

Jeff Trovatten walked into the St. Genevieve High football office for the first time this summer and didn't like what he discovered. The videotapes of every Valiants game last season were gone. Forty sets of knee braces and 22 new footballs had disappeared. The place looked deserted. The school's former coach, Richard Fong--who was named The Times' Valley Coach of the Year after he led the Valiants to a 9-3 record and a league championship--had resigned to take an assistant job on Crespi.
