As a college freshman, Jeff Von Lutzow was party to the worst basketball season in UC Irvine history--five victories overwhelmed by 23 defeats--but was able to console himself with the thought then that there was nowhere to go but up. He was right. As a senior, Von Lutzow went 6-21. "I never visualized this," Von Lutzow said Friday afternoon after closing his college career with--what else?--a defeat. Who could, without immediately sprinting for the nearest exit?

Jeff Von Lutzow's teammates comfort him, or try to. They tell him not to worry; they have seen this before. He is not the first player UC Irvine Coach Bill Mulligan has singled out for criticism or ridicule. Remember Wayne Engelstad? Nor do they imagine he will be the last. "Players come up to me and they tell me it's like a test Mulligan makes," said Von Lutzow, a sophomore forward. "They help me out a lot, encourage me. They say he just wants to see how you react." So far, not so well.

There were 22 seconds left when Khari Johnson and Elgin Rogers and some of the other players on UC Irvine's bench started lifting their jerseys to show the T-shirts underneath. "I think we can," the shirts read. "UCI basketball." They could, and what was more, they did. The Anteaters, who entered the Big West Conference tournament with a 6-21 record, pulled off an 88-67 upset of top-seeded UC Santa Barbara in the first round Friday night in front of 4,134 at Long Beach Arena.
