Two Los Angeles police officers shot and killed a man who allegedly pointed a pistol at them Saturday night near Jefferson Park, authorities said. The suspect, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene, a .357 magnum handgun by his side, after the 8:50 p.m. incident, said Officer Mike Lopez, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department. The victim had not been identified as of late Sunday.

An elderly woman was in critical condition and her son was in serious but stable condition Friday after they were burned in a fire that raced through a room of their home in the Jefferson Park neighborhood Thursday evening, city fire officials said. The fire, in the 2000 block of west 28th Street, started after a lit cigarette ignited a piece of furniture, spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

Three Pasadena neighborhood associations won awards during last weekend's Neighborhoods USA Conference. Pasadena's Bungalow Heaven Neighborhood Assn. took top honors in the physical needs category for restoring its neighborhood park. Members of the association eliminated drug and gang activity at McDonald Park, where children now can play safely. The Navarro Avenue-Tremont Howard Assn. placed second in the social needs category for its public safety project.

A 21-year-old gang member has been arrested on suspicion of shooting to death a teenage boy and wounding another last Sunday night outside a Jefferson Park neighborhood carnival, police said. Jason Walton was apprehended after witnesses identified him as the gunman in the shooting of 14-year-olds William Cox and Edward Williams, police said. Cox died at the scene, but Williams was expected to make a full recovery.

A gunman accosted five teenagers looking for a party in the Jefferson Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, killing two of them and wounding two others as they tried to drive away, police said Sunday. The young people arrived in two cars in the 3100 block of West Adams Boulevard shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday, and got out to look for a party they believed was being held in the area, said Los Angeles Police Officer Lucy Diaz.

Four people were wounded Friday in separate drive-by shootings in South Los Angeles. The first shooting left two women critically wounded in an industrial neighborhood at South San Pedro Street and West Slauson Avenue just before 2:30 p.m. The women, in their 20s, were in a car and became involved in a dispute with three or four males in another car, Sgt. Randy Goens said. One of the men fired a semiautomatic rifle, striking each woman once in the upper body, Goens said.

A vigil took place on Christmas Eve at the site in South Los Angeles where a 35-year-old man was stabbed to death in an attack that has left police searching for the killer and a motive. William Jennings died about 10:30 p.m. Friday after a confrontation in the 3300 block of West Jefferson Boulevard in the Jefferson Park neighborhood. He and his wife had just walked home from a Christmas party, according to relatives, when he went to the corner store. During that quick trip, he was approached by another man who pulled out a knife and stabbed Jennings after a brief dispute, according to police.

Law enforcement officials were investigating several killings in Los Angeles County on Saturday, including those of two men slain in separate shootings in South L.A. and a woman stabbed to death in West Hills. The stabbing took place in the 7100 block of Deveron Ridge Road around 7:30 a.m., Los Angeles police said. Officer Rosario Herrera said the woman was stabbed multiple times by a man and died at the scene. A coroner's official identified the victim as Michelle Kane, 43. The suspect was not immediately identified.

Alan G. Buckner, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge who in 1997 issued a precedent-setting ban on public gatherings by several members of the notorious 18th Street gang, has died. He was 65. Buckner, who had suffered from heart problems and prostate cancer, died Dec. 12 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. On Monday, Los Angeles County coroner's investigator Selena Barros told The Times the death had been ruled a suicide.
