Hollywood Boulevard is home to both the Pantages Theatre and Madame Tussauds, and there were times during the new production of "Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical" that I wondered if the two institutions had arranged a secret merger. This pre-Broadway touring production, which opened Tuesday at the Pantages, combines power singing and theatrical waxworks to retell the Robert Louis Stevenson tale of a doctor with a damnable dark side. The experience of the show, never a critic's darling, can only be compared to watching "American Idol" from inside an amusement park gallery showcasing the fiendish modus operandi of infamous murderers.

His offices in Seoul are nearly 7,000 miles from New York - a 14-hour flight made several times a year - but that hasn't deterred Chun-soo Shin from his bid to become a major Broadway player. One of Korea's top theater producers, Shin has already made money off the growing popularity of American-style musicals in his native country. His hits include "Dreamgirls" and "Jekyll & Hyde," the latter of which has become one of the most popular musicals ever produced in Korea. The 45-year-old Shin is now looking to take his success to a global level.

The lithe beauty in the form-fitting, flame-red sweater-jacket, even tighter black slacks and stiletto-heeled shoes with metal buckles planted herself in the lap of a strapping, handsome, lightly bearded fellow and started giving him a come-on in a saucy Cockney accent. Sitting 12 feet away, a second man watched with intense concentration, eyes fixed on the couple, chin cradled in his palm. In certain circumstances, this might be some kind of kinky fantasy. But here in a basement rehearsal room at the Pantages Theatre, it was serious show business.

Director Jan Duncan says she wanted to cloak Fullerton Civic Light Opera's "Jekyll & Hyde" in as much "deeply gothic" style as possible. Mission accomplished. Her staging is so darkly moody it's almost forbidding. But atmosphere isn't enough to conceal the musical's weaknesses. Even Duncan realizes the flaws and has tweaked "Jekyll & Hyde" to help the story unfold more readily. Most notably, a few songs have been moved to spots Duncan feels will better reveal characters.

"Jekyll & Hyde" (at 9 p.m. Sunday on Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42) is a mutant version of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic. The production, shot in London, adds Michael Caine to the gallery of stars who have preceded him as the tormented doctor (notably John Barrymore, Fredric March and Spencer Tracy); we'll ignore the several bizarre spinoffs, such as Martine Beswick in "Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde"). Ultimately, however, all this remake does is reconfirm the 1931 March movie as untouchable.

The moon was nearly full, the fog thick, two nights ago when San Diego Repertory Theatre unveiled Douglas Jacobs' new adaptation of "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde." Although the endless amounts of fog inside the Lyceum Stage were chemically concocted, Czechoslovakian scenographer Ladislav Vychodil's black-lighted set intensified the night's chilly mood. Orange-stringed webbing in a huge, triangulated fragment slashed across the lighting grid.

The latest changes made to the musical thriller "Jekyll & Hyde" manage to streamline and class things up a bit. Which begs the question: Is tasteful schlock preferable to risible schlock? Not necessarily. Generally speaking, not at all. I like my schlock straight, no chaser, no restraint or taste of any kind. You get plenty of both--the tasteful and the risible--in this 1990 Leslie Bricusse/Frank Wildhorn musical. An earlier version played Costa Mesa back in 1995.

Pop composer Frank Wildhorn's rented condo in Woodland Hills has a transient, impermanent, semi-lived-in look. Two thousand miles away, his main squeeze, pop singer Linda Eder, is living out of a garment bag in the Dallas Marriott. They met seven years ago at the Actors Equity Building in New York City. It was love at first hearing. "I heard a voice like I'd never heard in my life," he says. "I was drawn to the music," she says.

With 11 nominations, the musical "Miss Saigon," presented by Civic Light Opera of South Bay Cities, has made the top of the list of nominations for the 2008 Ovation Awards, LA Stage Alliance’s peer-judged awards recognizing excellence in California theater. Other big nominees include "All Shook Up" at Musical Theatre West (10 nominations), "Jekyll & Hyde" at Cabrillo Music Theatre (nine) and "Singin' in the Rain"(nine), also at Cabrillo Music Theatre, which put that theater at the top of the list of nominations for an individual company.

The Season 2 finale of "Kourtney and Kim Take New York" drew 4.5 million viewers Sunday night, according to Nielsen. That's more than double last year's finale and was in fact the third-most-watched telecast in E!'s history — despite last year's boycott petition that begged the network to cancel the show, a spinoff of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians. " So if you were thinking that Kim's notorious 72-day marriage and the Kardashian clan's relentless pursuit of overexposure have faded their allure ... um, think again!

Three local productions of contemporary Broadway musicals and a new play about morality won the most 2008 Ovation Awards, the LA Stage Alliance's honors for the best in Southern California theater. The awards were to be presented Monday night at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State L.A. "Miss Saigon," a production of Civic Light Opera of South Bay Cities, won four awards, including best musical at a large theater and best actress in a musical for Jennifer Paz. "The Quality of Life," a Geffen Playhouse world premiere of a Jane Anderson play about morality, religion and self-righteousness, won three awards, for best play in an intimate theater, for lead actress Laurie Metcalf and for playwright Anderson.

There is much to celebrate about REDCAT's annual New Original Works Festival, which opened its three-week, three-program run Thursday. To begin with, there is a fair amount of assurance by now that, after five years, the festival's selections, chosen out of a pool of more than 100 applicants, will more than reward one's sense of adventure. And, as the first program amply demonstrates, the work may be fresh out of the box but the phrase "under construction" is hardly apt. Certainly, Baker & Tarpaga Dance Project's "Sira Kan/On the Road" will benefit from future pruning of a messy middle section, but the piece has "good bones" -- a strong premise and structure, studded with provocative images.

Granted, Dr. Henry Jekyll's quest to find a chemical cure for mental illness would have to be considered an early misstep on the road to Prozac. But as a mirror for contemplating the conflicted good and evil in each of us, the remarkably effective Cabrillo Music Theatre revival of "Jekyll & Hyde," the Frank Wildhorn-Leslie Bricusse gothic musical, finds continuing resonance in the cautionary tale penned by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1886. Credit the producers for committing the talent and resources to making the most of the creators' epic ambitions.

"A big, chunky, Costco-size show." That's how producer James Blackman introduced "Jekyll & Hyde" to his audience on opening night at Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center. He didn't explain what he meant. But his reference to a popular store where people buy cheap products in large quantities is an apt analogy to this musical and especially its score, by Frank Wildhorn and Leslie Bricusse. Like the store, the score certainly doesn't shrink from the idea of quantity.
