Tito Ortiz, an "ultimate fighting" star, will not be the guest of honor at the Marine Corps birthday ball sponsored by the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station because of objections by top officers to his intended date, pornography star Jenna Jameson. The Marine command decided Jameson was "not an individual or guest that we really felt was appropriate" for the ball, which celebrates the founding of the corps, a spokesman said. Told of the objection, Ortiz bowed out of the Nov. 13 event.

So Jenna Jameson is the new "Pretty Woman" ["The XXX Files," by Strawberry Saroyan, Sept. 11]? I weep for a society whose new role model for 13-year-old girls is a woman who perpetuates the myth that women are only valuable as disposable sexual objects. While I am sure there are men tickled at the idea that their girlfriends, with a little help from Jenna, can learn "How to Make Love Like a Porn Star," let us remember that the appeal of porn (which I happen to like) is all in fake fantasy encounters with fake women with fake physical attributes who fake orgasms ... and disappear when you click the off button on the remote.

Jenna Jameson's next new lover may be a demon. The porn icon, entrepreneur and bestselling author will be the star of her own comic book, "Shadow Hunter," which she will promote this weekend at Comic-Con International in San Diego. Jameson said Tuesday that she will have "a hands-on role" with the stories in the comic book, which will be published, beginning in December, by Virgin Comics, a company that also has creator deals with Nicolas Cage, John Woo and Guy Ritchie.

Porn icon Jenna Jameson is shedding her assets, selling Club Jenna Inc. to adult entertainment giant Playboy Enterprises. Playboy said Thursday that it had paid an undisclosed amount of cash for the hard-core film production company founded by Jameson, one of the world's most celebrated sex stars. The Phoenix-based company also owns 18 websites and a library of adult films, including "I Dream of Jenna" and "The Masseuse."

Just when you thought it was getting easier to be a porn star, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders' collection of portraits, "XXX," reminds us that California's porn industry is as competitive as it is crowded. Of the 30-odd stars chosen for this collection, a few have become household names. But how many aspiring porn actors are still journeyman performers? These X-rated celebrities -- all appearing both naked and clothed -- display a courage that some of the accompanying essayists lack.

There's one sector of the entertainment industry that has not been roiled by the Internet, the economy or ever-changing consumer tastes. Say hello to Hollywood's most stable business: Soft-core pornography. The oft-mocked genre, which has given the world such memorable fare as "Witches of Breastwick" and "Tarzeena: Jiggle in the Jungle," is more visible — and valuable — than ever, even at a time when hard-core adult entertainment is easily accessible on every media device.
