There were different ways of sending the message. But more often than not, Whitney Pavlik relied on a simple soundtrack on the sand to convey direction to partner Kerri Walsh Jennings: "Line, line, line. " Sounded … and delivered down the line. It helped that the presence looming at the net is a towering figure in the sport of beach volleyball, Walsh Jennings, three-time Olympic gold medalist. But Pavlik and Walsh Jennings, who are seeded second, are figuring things out in what has been a brief time together as partners, and Saturday was one of those ideal building-block days at the Manhattan Beach Open.

Sean Rosenthal seemed to cover the whole beach in the FIVB Grand Slam gold medal match in Long Beach on Saturday. Diving digs. Tomahawk digs. Chicken-wing digs. Every time Pablo Herrera Allepuz and Adrian Gavira Collado of Spain were on the verge of swinging the momentum back their way, Rosenthal would hit the sand to keep a rally alive and he or partner Phil Dalhausser would finish with the kill. "I'm just doing what I've been taught and learned over the years, being patient and not guessing," Rosenthal said.

April Ross and Jennifer Kessy got their redemption Sunday. After the top-ranked pairing lost in the Round of 32 at the FIVB Grand Slam of beach volleyball Thursday, they rallied from behind to win the inaugural World Series Cup in Long Beach on Sunday. “We brought home the World Series Cup for the U.S. and that's a big deal,” Kessy said. “We're going to have our names on there first. Hopefully this is going to be a really long tradition, and April and my name will always be at the top, which is really exciting.” Ross and Kessy defeated Taiana Lima and Talita Antunes of Brazil, 15-21, 21-18, 17-15, in the World Series Cup final after winning the semifinal against Kerri Walsh Jennings and Whitney Pavlik in similar fashion Saturday.

Looking beautiful isn't the goal, but it's often a natural byproduct of the discipline, tenacity and good health required to be an Olympic champion. The beauty and fashion industries have taken note, sponsoring athletes, naming them brand ambassadors and featuring them on magazine covers, as Vogue did this month with a picture of tennis star Sabrina Williams and soccer goalie Hope Solo arm in arm with swimmer Ryan Lochte, all dressed in swimsuits and running on a sandy beach. Now that it is officially summer, we turned to some California Olympians for their thoughts on how to beat the heat and humidity that are intrinsic to their sports.

The United States Olympic Committee might want to stock up on Ross jerseys. Summer Ross, 20, proved why she's one of beach volleyball's up-and-coming stars Thursday, advancing to the FIVB Long Beach Grand Slam semifinals with Emily Day. Because top-seeded Americans April Ross and Jennifer Kessy were eliminated early in the tournament, Summer Ross - who is second cousins with April - and Day, 25, are the only U.S. pairing left in contention....

LONDON -- The United States has locked down at least one medal in women's beach volleyball, the color or colors to be determined, after two quarterfinal wins Sunday. Defending Olympic champions Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings quickly defeated Italians Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti in two sets, and Jennifer Kessy and April Ross beat the Czech Republic's Marketa Slukova and Kristyna Kolocova to advance to the semifinal round. The victories mean the American teams can finish no lower than third and fourth, ensuring the U.S. at least a bronze medal in the tournament at Horse Guards Parade.

LONDON -- Jennifer Kessy and April Ross were getting a little sick of this rivalry. Or non-rivalry. The U.S. team had played Brazil's Larissa Franca and Juliana Silva nine times before Tuesday night's women's beach volleyball Olympic semifinal. They had lost all nine. But on the 10th meeting, amid a steady supply of rain, a victory finally came for Kessy and Ross, 15-21, 21-19, 15-12, at Horse Guards Parade. Kessy and Ross will play the U.S. team of Misty May-Treanor  and Kerri Walsh-Jennings in the Olympic final Wednesday.

It was a moment of euphoria and triumph, bliss and spontaneity. Kerri Walsh Jennings had just won her third consecutive Olympic women's beach volleyball gold medal with partner Misty May-Treanor, and they were still celebrating on the sand at the Horse Guard Parade court in London when silver medalists April Ross and Jennifer Kessy approached with congratulations. Embracing Ross, Walsh Jennings had an impulsive thought. Pulling her close, she whispered in Ross' ear: "Let's win gold in Rio. " Ross was caught off guard, and Walsh Jennings surprised even herself.

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings and 2008 Olympic gold medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers lead a world-class field that will compete in the ASICS World Series of Beach Volleyball on July 22-28 in Long Beach. The 2012 London silver medalists April Ross and Jennifer Kessy, ranked No. 1 internationally, will also compete in an event that features 10 total Olympic medalists and competitors from 16 countries. In addition to the FIVB Grand Slam, the event will feature the inaugural World Series Cup, in which the top two U.S. teams will take on the top two international teams in what creator Leonard Armato hopes will become a Ryder Cup-esque tradition.

The deficits were there, overwhelmingly and stunningly. They're the reason Kerri Walsh Jennings cried at the end. Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor came back twice from uniquely ominous places to pull out a 22-20, 22-20 victory in a women's Olympic beach volleyball semifinal match Tuesday against China's Xue Chen and Zhang Xi. Strikingly, a third gold medal might not be out of the question for the U.S. tandem in its last tournament after...

LONDON -- The serve of April Ross kept on going and going, landing long on match point. Kerri Walsh Jennings watched it hit the sand and thrust her arms in the air, child-like delight on her face on this electric night. Three-peat achieved. The enduring duo of Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor won gold for the third time, beating Ross and Jennifer Kessy, 21-16, 21-16, in the London Olympics women's beach volleyball final Wednesday. It was an all-American meeting, a volleyball finale that could have been played in Huntington Beach or Manhattan Beach, not London.
