May 28, 1989 | Richard Peck, Peck's most recent novel for young adults is "Those Summer Girls I Never Met" (Delacorte)
Kristiana Gregory's first novel, "Jenny of the Tetons," fictionalizes the accounts left behind by a semi-literate Englishman, Richard "Beaver Dick" Leigh. Leigh was a guide and trapper who late in life led parties of prominent Easterners, such as Theodore Roosevelt, through Teton Valley and Jackson Hole country. The novel portrays his family life in the 1870s with his Shoshone wife, Jenny, and their six children, and the arrival of 15-year-old Carrie Hill, whom they believe to be the sole survivor of an Indian attack upon a wagon train.

'Gossip Girl': In Sunday's Calendar section, the Monitor column about "Gossip Girl" misquoted two lines of dialogue between characters discussing one's relationship. It read: "Jenny: 'Is that why we went dessert?' Elise: 'You went dessert?!?!?!' " The correct lines on the show were: "Jenny: 'Is that why we went to third?' Friend: 'You went to third?' "

Jenny doesn't like dolls. In fact, for the past two years she has hated dolls. Ever since her brother shattered her favorite one, something in Jenny broke too. Then one day, her mom led Jenny down the hall and into Nanna's old room. A large cardboard box sat on the bed. On its side, printed in large letters, was the word Dolls . "Mom, I don't want to arrange Grandma's things," Jenny said, stomping her feet. "I want to play with my friends. " "Not today, Jennifer.

Oh, how dumb we taxpayers are! Poor, dear, humiliated, embarrassed and angry Jenny! This lady, a member of the national honor society Psi Chi, has not been able to find work in Orange County for 14 months? Come on, Dianne. Look in your own Times classified ads for employment. With a bachelor's and a master's degree, Jenny could take on any number of jobs--perhaps not in psychology, but because of her field of expertise, it could apply to dozens of good jobs. I think she is most likely using the term overqualified in order to escape working for a living.

I have to say these last few days have been like no other. We skipped school, broke in to the science building, stole a car, stole gas, and made a shelter in Knoxville Tn. The budget may have been low but the talent runs high - both behind and in front of the camera - in director Nancy Savoca's "Union Square," a sharp and kinetic look at the strange bonds of family. Propelled by a rangy, superbly colorful performance by Mira Sorvino, the film grabs hold of the viewer from the jump and snowballs toward a deftly moving and concise third act. Sorvino's Lucy is a mouthy Bronx tornado who descends upon her estranged, buttoned-up sister, Jenny (Tammy Blanchard, also fine)

When British actress Carey Mulligan made her first trip to the Sundance Film Festival in January, she kept her hopes for her film "An Education" in check and looked at the journey as an adventure. But after the film was picked up -- in part because of Mulligan's much lauded performance -- everything changed for the 24-year-old. "You don't expect to go to Sundance and have your film bought, let alone any of the stuff that's come with it," she says of the award attention that has since surrounded her. "It was daunting, but it was exciting.

Wildflowers bloomed in a tiny garden - some red, purple and pink. Together, Jennifer Bonilla and Hailey Ordonez tended the patch in South Los Angeles, where the high schooler and the preschooler kept the flowers alive. Fourteen years separated the girls, but relatives noticed striking similarities - their coils of brown hair, their spunk. This week, not far from their garden, Hailey, 4, sat near burning candles, a crucifix and flowers as visitors looked at pictures of her aunt Jennifer.

Jenny McCarthy has learned the hard way that Twitter can be a dose of bitter medicine.  On Thursday, "The View" co-host posed a seemingly innocuous question to her 1.1 million followers on Twitter: " What is the most important personality trait you look for in a mate? Reply using #JennyAsks . " The former Playboy model and co-host of the '90s MTV dating show "Singled Out" has been one of the most outspoken celebrity advocates of a  debunked theory linking childhood vaccines with autism.

More than a year after the death of Latin music superstar Jenni Rivera, controversy and accusations continue to surround the circumstances of her death. The latest salvo comes from Rivera's husband, former Major League Baseball player Esteban Loaiza, who filed a wrongful-death suit against the owners of the aircraft that crashed with Rivera aboard, the Associated Press reported Friday. Loaiza was separated from Rivera at the time of her death but seeks unspecified damages. The suit, according to the Associated Press, names the  plane's owners, Starwood Management LLC and its parent company, Rodatz Financial Group.  Rivera, a native of Long Beach, and six others, including two pilots, died Dec. 9, 2012, when the private jet carrying them went into a dive, plummeting nose-first 28,000 feet in 30 seconds before hitting the side of a mountain.

Jenny Offill's riveting new novel, "Dept. of Speculation," is steeped in weird and geeky facts. It opens, for example, with the information that antelope have "10x vision" and on a clear night can see the rings of Saturn. It's a fitting beginning to a book that combines eclectic minutia with a laser-like narrative of a family on the edge of dissolution. The wife, the novel's nameless main character, is in crisis, threatened by abandonment. This has fragmented her interior life, and Offill's prose reflects this chaos: paragraphs shatter, surreal details rise up and into the narrative.

Julie Chen and Sharon Osborne went on Howard Stern's satellite radio show on Wednesday to discuss their CBS morning show, "The Talk. " But things soon turned to the prospect that "The Talk," which has been on the air since only 2010, would soon surpass its ABC forerunner, "The View," in the ratings. And that naturally prompted Stern to ask Chen and Osborne point-blank if it was a mistake for "The View" to have hired Jenny McCarthy as a panelist. Chen surprisingly answered yes. But then she went on to explain her thinking.
