Lee M. Anderson, the wife of former San Pedro Rep. Glenn M. Anderson, is the target of a grand jury investigation into alleged misuse of public funds in the 1992 congressional campaign of her son, Long Beach Councilman Evan Anderson Braude, a federal prosecutor said Tuesday. Lee Anderson was identified in court documents during a sentencing hearing Tuesday in U.S. District Court for the congressman's former Washington administrative assistant, Jeremiah Bresnahan.

Lee M. Anderson, wife of the late Glenn M. Anderson, who was a Democratic congressman from San Pedro, has pleaded guilty to a federal charge involving improper use of government travel funds, the Justice Department announced Friday. The guilty plea in Washington on Thursday is the result of a two-year investigation into the diversion of U.S. House administrative funds to the 1992 congressional campaign of Anderson's stepson, former Long Beach Councilman Evan Anderson Braude.

The administrative assistant to former Southern California congressman Glenn M. Anderson has pleaded guilty to theft in a plea agreement with federal prosecutors who accused him of misusing Anderson's staff last year to work on the election campaign of a congressional candidate. The federal complaint against Jeremiah Bresnahan does not say whose election campaign was involved.

A company that planned to open a halfway house for federal prisoners in Wilmington has been forced to put the project on hold--perhaps permanently--because federal officials have decided to seek new bids for the job, a company official said this week. Barry Rubin, regional vice president of Behavioral Systems Southwest, said the Bureau of Prisons notified him last week that it was canceling the company's contract to open a halfway house for prisoners from the Long Beach and South Bay areas.

Joseph B. Vernick knows a thing or two about war. More than 40 years ago, he served in the U.S. Merchant Marine, often braving enemy fire to ferry supplies and ammunition to his country's armed forces. When the Japanese torpedoed his ship, he was taken prisoner and was interned for three years at a camp in the Philippines. For four decades after World War II ended, Vernick and other merchant seamen lobbied the federal government to grant them status as veterans. They won that battle last year--and Vernick, who lives in North Hollywood, finally received his prisoner of war medal just two months ago--but their fight for recognition and respect isn't over.
