USC fans skewered Lane Kiffin on Internet message boards. Steve Sarkisian did not fare much better. So any USC play-caller not named Norm Chow , it seems, is in for a tough go with the Trojans faithful. Jeremy Bates is not worried about it. USC's first-year quarterbacks coach and play-caller plans to tune out whatever criticism might come his way after Saturday's opener against San Jose State and beyond. The Emerald Bowl will be a new experience for USC, which is accustomed to playing higher-profile games during the bowl season. That doesn't mean, however, that the Trojans will throw caution to the wind. Asked Thursday if the Dec. 26 game against Boston College would provide an opportunity to experiment, offensive play-caller Jeremy Bates was steadfast. "We're not going to change and go to the spread offense," Bates said after practice. "This offense has been successful.

Such is the state of British tennis that when Jeremy Bates defeated Michael Chang here Tuesday, there were so many Union Jacks flying from the grandstands it looked like Adm. Nelson at match point in Trafalgar. Bates did two quick spins in celebration, pumped his fists twice--as if he had just won the final on Centre Court--and got a rousing, standing ovation. As Chang put a ball into the net to end it, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, Bates could scarcely contain his enthusiasm.

As USC attempts to move forward after its upset loss to Washington, Coach Pete Carroll says the Trojans' turnover problems need to be dealt with aggressively. But what of the conservative play-calling that seemed to shackle the Trojans at times in their 16-13 defeat? Carroll on Sunday defended the decisions of play-caller Jeremy Bates , who became an immediate topic for Internet message-board vitriol the second Erik Folk kicked the game-winning field goal for the Huskies.

Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart was among the hundreds of onlookers at USC's first spring workout Saturday. And he was probably the only one who could truly relate to the four quarterbacks vying to become the Trojans' starter. Leinart won a spring quarterback competition over three others in 2003, setting the stage for one of the most celebrated careers in college football history.

USC's coaching carousel continued to spin Monday as Pete Carroll hired one quarterbacks coach to replace another who had not yet arrived on campus. Carroll announced that Denver Broncos assistant Jeremy Bates would be the Trojans' assistant head coach for offense. He also will call plays. Bates, 32, replaces Carl Smith, who was named to the position on Jan. 6 but had yet to start work. Smith, USC's quarterbacks coach in 2004, interviewed with the Cleveland Browns last week.

Jeremy Bates, Britain's top-ranked player but only 219th in the world, beat David Pate, 6-4, 6-2, in the London Queens Club tournament, a grass-court tuneup for Wimbledon. Pam Shriver lost four games in a row in the second set but still swept Britain's Julie Salmon, 6-0, 6-4, in the opening round of the $150,000 Edgbaston women's grass-court tournament at Birmingham, England.

Unseeded Americans Robert Van't Hof, Richey Reneberg and Joey Rive scored first-round victories today in the South African Open tennis tournament. Van't Hof was leading fourth-seeded Paolo Cane, 6-3, 2-0, when the Italian retired from the match. Reneberg beat South African Pieter Aldrich, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, and Rive defeated West German Alexander Mronz, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The International Olympic Committee confirmed Monday that any players competing in the event would be barred from the 1992 Games.

Pat Cash won two matches today to lead Australia to a 2-1 victory over Britain in the opening series of the Hopman Cup team tennis championship. Cash defeated Jeremy Bates, 6-1, 6-1, in the men's singles and then teamed with Liz Smylie to beat Bates and Sarah Loosemore, 6-4, 6-2, in the mixed doubles.
