Given Jeremy Braxton-Brown's previous experiences in postseason water polo, you might think he would dread this time of year. Braxton-Brown's final two seasons at Capistrano Valley High ended with him fouled out, watching from the pool deck as the Cougars lost in the playoffs--in 1991 in the Southern Section final to San Clemente, in 1992 in the second round to Corona del Mar.

Brian Melstrom scored the winning goal on a shot to the upper right corner of the goal from half-tank with one second left to lead Edison to a 7-6 victory over Crespi in a Southern Section 3-A Division water polo playoff game Friday at Golden West College. Crespi had tied the score with just six seconds to play. Todd McClung had two goals, and Matt Schacht had 14 saves for Edison (19-8). Edison scored four goals in the fourth quarter, three by Melstrom and one by McClung.

Jeremy Braxton-Brown, a senior water polo player at Capistrano Valley, has made an oral commitment to attend UCLA, his father, Greg, said Tuesday. Braxton-Brown, who was the South Coast League player of the year and a first-team All-CIF selection in 1991, has led Capistrano Valley to a 23-1 record and a No. 2-ranking in Orange County.

After settling matters in the South Coast League, San Clemente and Capistrano Valley will play for the Southern Section Division 4-A water polo title at 8:30 tonight at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach. Capistrano Valley (25-4) defeated San Clemente, 9-5, in league play and went on to win the title. San Clemente (26-4), which had been favored to win the league championship, also lost to Dana Hills, finished in third place and was forced to play a wild-card playoff match.

Robbie Pike's 10 saves helped Corona del Mar High School to a 6-4 victory over Coronado in the quarterfinals of the North Orange County water polo tournament at Tustin High. Austin Weir led the Sea Kings with two goals. Corona del Mar plays Capistrano Valley at 4 p.m today at Fullerton's Independence Park in the semifinals. In other quarterfinal games: Capistrano Valley 9, Sunny Hills 3--Jeremy Braxton-Brown scored four goals as Capistrano Valley advanced.

Daniel Mathot and Jason Murray of El Toro, the Southern Section Division I champion, are expected to be among the players featured in the Orange County all-star water polo match scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Tustin High School. Mathot and Murray would play for a South team that also is expected to feature Capistrano Valley's Jeremy Braxton-Brown, MVP of the South Coast League, and Bryce Matthews of San Clemente.

UCLA put on an offensive display Friday to defeat UC San Diego, 21-10, and reach the NCAA water polo final at Stanford. On Sunday, the Bruins will face top-seeded California, which scored six goals in the first quarter and defeated Massachusetts, 10-6. UCLA, which lost the 1991 championship match to Cal, 7-6, will be looking for its first water polo title since 1972.

Corona del Mar combined flawless defense with some timely goals to post an 8-5 upset of second-seeded Capistrano Valley in a Southern Section Division I water polo quarterfinal at Corona del Mar High School Tuesday. The Sea Kings (19-8) advance to play North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake in the semifinals Friday at 7 p.m. at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.
