The judge just threw the book at running back Jeremy Hill. Thankfully for Louisiana State fans, it was the playbook. With the legal system already backlogged and training camp approaching, District Judge Bonnie Jackson ordered Hill to 40 hours of community service for his latest brush with the law. It was a good thing Hill, already on probation, was not recorded on video laughing after he sucker-punched that guy in the bar in April....

While quarterback Cody Kessler took the majority of snaps with the first-team offense during USC's scrimmage Thursday at the Coliseum, Max Wittek got only one series with the starters. But Wittek, who is competing with Kessler for the starting job, said he was not frustrated. “We just take advantage of all the reps we get, whether that's with the ones, twos or even threes,” Wittek said. “A lot of times, the coaches want to see us with those different groups to see how we manage the game and help the people around us. “We just make the most of all the opportunities we do get.” Wittek played well Thursday, completing 13 of 20 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns, including a 70-yard scoring play to receiver Nelson Agholor.

Tailback Justin Davis made a big impression in spring practice after graduating from high school in December and enrolling at USC. After nearly a week of training camp, the 6-foot-1, 200-pound Davis remains on track to possibly play a significant role as a freshman. Davis, who performed well in Coliseum scrimmages last spring, rushed for 32 yards and a touchdown in six carries in a scrimmage at the stadium Thursday. "Justin continued what he's done ... every time we've come in here," Coach Lane Kiffin said.

The Sacramento Kings finally appear to be staying put in the state capital, possibly ending an emotional saga that has dragged on for nearly three years. The NBA's relocation committee voted unanimously Monday to recommend that owners reject the application for the Kings to relocate to Seattle, the latest - and by far the strongest - in a long line of cities that almost landed the franchise. The 12 league owners on the committee made the decision over a conference call and forwarded the recommendation to the NBA Board of Governors.

Gary Patterson, who helped build Texas Christian into a national college football power, had harsh words for Louisiana State Coach Les Miles after he reinstated top returning running back Jeremy Hill, who pleaded guilty to simple battery after punching a man outside a bar in Baton Rouge. Patterson levied his critical comments after Miles let the LSU team members vote on whether to reinstate Hill. Of course, the vote went Hill's way. Meanwhile, Patterson suspended his top defensive player, end Devonte Fields, for the season-opening game against the Tigers on Aug. 31 at Cowboys Stadium.

With leading sports officials and world leaders continuing to voice concerns, the International Olympic Committee has asked the Russian government for reassurance that the country's new anti-gay law will not be enforced on athletes at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games. The law bans "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations," including discussion of gay rights and relationships where children might overhear. The Russians provided some form of assurance on Thursday but the IOC wants more.

New York Giants star receiver Victor Cruz signed a five-year contract extension that runs through the 2018 season. Cruz was a restricted free agent with three years in the NFL. Last month, he signed a one-year, $2.879-million tender with the Giants, but a long-term deal was already in the works. The Giants could have matched any offers Cruz received from other teams - so he didn't get any. The new deal is worth $43 million, according to media reports. --- The NFL and former players must try to negotiate a dispute over whether complaints about concussion-related injuries belong in court or in arbitration, a federal judge said.
