Jeremy Laster didn't waste any time resting on the laurels of San Clemente's first Southern Section water polo championship. Two days after he helped the Tritons win the Division 4-A title--and the day after Thanksgiving--Laster was back in the pool, training for his return to international water polo. This month, Laster will compete for the U.S. junior national team in Calgary, Canada.

Miscellany Yugoslavia defeated the U.S. men's water polo team, 9-6, in an exhibition game Saturday at Corona del Mar High. San Clemente's Jeremy Laster and Newport Beach's Chris Oeding each scored two goals. In another exhibition game Saturday at Corona del Mar, Courtney Johnson scored three goals to lead the U.S. women's team past Canada, 10-6.

Capistrano Valley defeated Coronado, 8-7, and San Clemente defeated Costa Mesa, 12-5, to advance to this morning's championship semifinals at the Villa Park water polo tournament. Matt Barrett led Capistrano Valley with three goals, and Jeff Moloughney and Alex Lesser each scored two goals. Jeremy Laster had four goals in San Clemente's victory. The title game is at 3 p.m. today.

Six water polo players with Orange County ties are on the U.S. national team for the Pan Am Games. Gavin Arroyo from Villa Park High, Jeremy Laster (San Clemente High), Chris Oeding (Corona del Mar High) and reserve goalkeeper Dan Hackett (Irvine High) will join two-time Olympians Chris Duplanty, a goalkeeper from UC Irvine, and Doug Kimbell (Villa Park) on the team.

Jeremy Laster of San Clemente High School, considered one of the top water polo recruits in the nation, said Tuesday he has has orally committed to play at Stanford. Laster plans to sign with Stanford Friday, choosing the Cardinal over California, Harvard, Pepperdine and UCLA. Laster, a member of the national junior team, scored 98 goals last season and led San Clemente to the Southern Section 4-A title. He also was named 4-A player of the year.

Three Orange County high school athletes have been nominated for Los Angeles area youth athlete of the year by the Los Angeles' Sports Dream '92 committee at Childrens Hospital. San Clemente water polo player Jeremy Laster, Newport Harbor volleyball player Justin McIntee and Western golfer Tiger Woods were selected as the top performers in their respective sports. Public voting will determine the winner among the 10 nominees. The results will be announced May 20.
