Riley Cooper has decided to step away from the NFL for an undetermined amount of time. The Philadelphia Eagles receiver, who was caught on camera using a racist slur for black people, released a statement Friday saying he needs time to “reflect on the situation.” “The last few days have been incredibly difficult for me,” Cooper said. “My actions were inexcusable. The more I think about what I did, the more disgusted I get. I keep trying to figure out how I could have said something so repulsive, and what I can do to make things better.

Pro Bowl receiver DeSean Jackson is so speedy, one of his Philadelphia Eagles teammates describes him as "a different breed" and "a freak of nature. " It wasn't some plodding offensive lineman who called him that, but hard-to-impress quarterback Michael Vick, who relies on Jackson (and receiver Jeremy Maclin) to stretch the field and test the limits of a defense. Jackson will be a key offensive weapon Sunday night when the Eagles play host to the New York Giants with first place in the NFC East on the line.

Reporting from Philadelphia Michael Vick is no big deal with the Washington Redskins. He's 5 feet, 7 inches and 150 pounds, to be exact. That's the size of smoking-fast Redskins rookie Brandon Banks, a practice-squad player who this week is assigned to emulate the Eagles quarterback in advance of Sunday's game between Washington and Philadelphia. Opposing teams will do just about anything to simulate the challenge presented by Vick, who has thrown six touchdown passes and run 23 times for an average of 7.4 yards a carry.

Dunta Robinson hit. And the NFL hit back. The league Monday fined the Atlanta Falcons cornerback $40,000 for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Philadelphia's Jeremy Maclin, reasoning the receiver was in a "defenseless posture" having just made a catch an instant before. The hit came with 6 minutes 12 seconds to play in the third quarter, as Maclin was running across the middle with the ball. Robinson blasted his helmet into Maclin's, flattening the receiver. Maclin lay on the turf for several seconds and got up slowly but was able to return to the game.

Al Michaels serves as the play-by-play announcer and Cris Collinsworth provides the color commentary for tonight's Philadelphia at New York Giants game (5:15, Ch. 4): Michaels says ... The Giants saved their season with a win over the Cowboys last Sunday. By midnight Eastern time, they'll either be desperately holding on to an outside shot at a wild card, or in position to make a serious run at the NFC East title. On what figures to be a cold and windy night, the Giants' defense will be a major factor.
