At first I thought it was merely a result of not having had to run a comb across my own scalp since the first Bush administration that I found David O. Russell's  “American Hustle” so follicularly fascinating - just watching the trailers I was mesmerized by Christian Bale's intricately disastrous comb-over, Bradley Cooper's poodle-curl perm and the tonsorial tower of power that somehow made Jeremy Renner look like the long-lost brother of SNL's...

Jeremy Renner was having a flashback, a kind of off-camera, post-traumatic stress moment. For nearly half an hour, the 38-year-old performer had been chatting away, eloquently and amiably, about acting, the Middle East and his lead role as a U.S. Army bomb squad technician on the streets of Baghdad in Kathryn Bigelow's calculatedly nerve-racking new film, "The Hurt Locker," which opens Friday here and in New York.

Gerard Butler, Jeremy Renner and Edward Norton were just a few of the stars who turned out to a cocktail party celebrating Ermenegildo Zegna's relocated Rodeo Drive flagship Thursday night, a movable man-packed bash that shifted to a Hollywood design gallery where dinner was served, drinks were poured and the label's spring and summer 2014 advertising campaign -- the first by Stefano Pilati - was unveiled. Zegna's not new to the neighborhood by any means -- it's been a fixture on Rodeo Drive for nearly two decades.

Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner could be the latest A-listers hitting the boards. The pair, who co-star as superheroes in the expected blockbuster "The Avengers" opening Friday, could be Broadway bound as husband and wife in a revival of Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. " Oscar-winner and recent resident action hero Renner revealed last month he was considering starring as Brick alongside Johansson as Maggie. Johansson, who on Wednesday received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, won a Tony for her 2010 role in Arthur Miller's "A View From the Bridge.

After kicking around the festival circuit for a few years, "Ingenious" finally sees release thanks in no small part to the risen fortunes of Jeremy Renner. Now, of course, Renner is a star in the Jason Bourne and "Avengers" action franchises, but before his Oscar-nominated turn in "The Hurt Locker," he was more or less a less a largely unknown working actor. Directed by Jeff Balsmeyer from a script by Mike Cram and based on a true story, the film is the tale of two friends, one an inventor (Dallas Roberts, himself a capable, underrated talent)

Jeremy Renner is a newly minted member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, thanks to his lead actor nomination for playing the gonzo bomb detonator in " The Hurt Locker. " Renner speaks highly of the honor, but what he's really digging right now are the film screeners that have been arriving. He plans to take a stack with him to Vancouver, Canada, when he heads north to continue filming the latest "Mission Impossible" movie. "They'll keep me out of trouble," Renner says.

Matt Damon didn't want to make another Jason Bourne movie, and neither did director Paul Greengrass. When your leading man and star filmmaker have departed one of your most profitable series, the alternatives aren't great. But in today's Hollywood, those options do not include throwing in the towel. Opening Friday, "The Bourne Legacy"is Universal Pictures' audacious answer to its spy series quandary. Rather than ditch Damon for another actor - the case when Harrison Ford replaced Alec Baldwin in the Tom Clancy movies or repeatedly with James Bond - the studio decided to create a parallel plot with a new actor, "The Hurt Locker's" Jeremy Renner, and added a fresh director, "Michael Clayton's" Tony Gilroy.

From a story once passed down in the oral tradition comes a version transmitted by repetitive audio-visual assault in "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. " The notorious folkloric tale about lost little siblings encountering the worst kind of sugar-coated bad news has been given a jokey R-rated once-over by Norwegian writer-director Tommy Wirkola, whose calling card as a purveyor of wink, wink, splatter, splatter entertainment was the 2009 undead Nazis romp "Dead Snow. " There's little to suggest, however, that shifting from zombies to witches has shaken his love of obliterating bodies by any means necessary.

"There was never just one. " That advertising tag line for "The Bourne Legacy"has an almost apologetic ring to it, as if making a Bourne film without Matt Damon - the star of the first three and the epitome of the empathetic killing machine that is Jason Bourne - was a brash and risky move. As it turns out, no one needed to worry, because few films have less to apologize for than this one. Complex, unexpected and dazzling, alternating relentless tension with resonant emotional moments, this is an exemplary espionage thriller that has a strong sense of what it wants to accomplish and how best to get there.

Even Iron Man can twist an ankle. Robert Downey Jr., the hammy captain of the massive "Avengers," sustained a small injury this week on the set of "Iron Man 3. " On location in Wilmington, N.C., Downey hurt his ankle mid-stunt, a release from Marvel Studios said. Production on the film, costarring Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley and Don Cheadle, will experience a slight delay. A rep for Robert told EW that the star would be just fine, and that's good news for the film's fast-approaching May 3, 2013, opening day. Speaking of openings: Marvel has announced that the sequel to Joss Whedon's "Avengers" will hit theaters May 1, 2015.

A film that was made because a studio was loathe to abandon a money-making franchise, a film made without the star that made that series so successful, a summer entertainment without a big box office name: If the movie business were ruled by logic, "The Bourne Legacy"wouldn't have a chance. But the reality is that this brash and risky movie is one of the joys of the summer. Complex, unexpected and dazzling, alternating relentless tension with resonant emotional moments, this is an exemplary espionage thriller (impeccably cast from stars Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton on down)
