Jerry Leggett, the New Orleans Saints' ninth-round draft choice from Cal State Fullerton, cannot forget the details of Aug. 26, 1977, no matter how hard he tries. But then, neither can the community of Meridian, Miss. Eleven years ago, the day after Leggett's 12th birthday, his mother, Ruth, was hacked to death and his younger brother and sister were so badly beaten that they have never been the same, family members and police say.

Alex Stewart's long wait to be drafted ended Monday morning when Minnesota chose him in the eighth round of the National Football League draft, five rounds lower than Stewart had expected to go. Stewart played only eight games of major-college football as a defensive lineman at Cal State Fullerton and had only 38 tackles, but did so well in the tests of athletic ability at the NFL scouting combine that some draft experts predicted he would be...

Shane Foley, a former Orange County career passing leader who saw limited action at USC, was selected by the London Monarchs in the 15th round of the World League of American Football draft Wednesday. "I'm really excited about getting another chance to play," said Foley, who passed for 5,361 yards while at Newport Harbor in 1984 and 1985, a mark later surpassed by Todd Marinovich. "I've never been to Europe. I'm really pumped up about going over there and playing football again.

Cal State Fullerton was headed full-throttle toward what Coach Gene Murphy calls "self-destruction" against Nevada Las Vegas Saturday night. The Titans couldn't seem to score a touchdown from first-and-goal, and the demons that haunt kicker Stan Lambert inside 30 yards were acting up. But guess what? UNLV did a bit of self-destructing itself.

When you watch Derek Jones play basketball, minutes and halves and sometimes an entire game will pass without it crossing your mind that he was not supposed to be able to do this. Jones' comeback from the shotgun blast to his left side that critically wounded him in August of 1987 has been so successful that sometimes, for a while, you can forget what he has accomplished. And on occasion, you could almost forget what he has come back against.

Cal State Fullerton's first basketball game is only 2 days away, and Coach John Sneed is still looking for a point guard. Maybe looking isn't quite the word. It's more like waiting. The starting point guard in the Titans' opener against Utah in Salt Lake City Thursday will be either Marlon Vaughn, a junior, or Wayne Williams, a freshman. Vaughn clearly has the advantage in experience, but Williams seems to have more potential. Who will it be? "It's still up for grabs," Sneed said.

On a Senior Recognition Day that began with most of the seniors recognizable on the bench, Cal State Fullerton ended its season Saturday afternoon with a 23-13 victory over Utah State, clinching second place in the Big West Conference.

For once, there was no red and rowdy crowd of 30,000, and for once, there was a rather beatable Fresno State team. Cal State Fullerton had the privilege of playing Fresno at home Saturday for only the third time in 10 years. And in a performance rife with penalties and dropped passes and overthrown passes and thwarted drives, Fullerton lost to Fresno for the fourth time in four years, taking a 23-10 loss in front of 5,108 in Santa Ana Stadium.
