General Manager Omar Minaya and Manager Jerry Manuel will not be retained by the New York Mets, according to multiple media reports Friday. "It sounds like everybody's got me written off, but nobody's told me I'm written off," Manuel told MLB.com. He said he had not discussed his status with his superiors. The search for a new manager figures to take a while since the Mets are expected to first hire a general manager, who then will have input into the decision on a new manager.

Target Field's reputation as a tough place for power hitters hasn't vanished. The Twins, A's and Royals combined to hit only three homers in five games there last week, with Jason Kubel hitting one ball to the warning track in right that teammate Danny Valencia thought was "going to be in the upper deck. " … Keys to the Indians' fast start — shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, who has four homers and 14 RBIs and won a game with a squeeze bunt; 3-4-5 starters Justin Masterson, Josh Tomlin and Mitch Talbot; the bullpen trio of closer Chris Perez and lefties Rafael Perez and Tony Sipp, who allowed four hits in their first 17 innings; and greatly improved fielding, which manager Manny Acta is most happy about.

A day after ending their second straight losing season, the New York Mets fired manager Jerry Manuel and general manager Omar Minaya , actions that had been widely expected. After starting the season with a $133-million payroll, fifth-highest in baseball, the Mets finished 79-83, 18 games behind Philadelphia in the NL East. There have been no playoff games in Queens since the Mets fell one game short of going to the World Series in 2006. "The last four years have been the most painful to me," team owner Fred Wilpon said, "and probably the most disappointing in what is over 30 years" as owner.

I consider Joe Torre a good friend. I'd have fired the guy Tuesday. New York newspaper quotes and radio snippets made it sound as if Torre was there a day earlier soliciting the job as Mets' manager. Isn't he still the Dodgers manager? The Dodgers aren't good enough for him? What does that say to Dodgers fans? "If Frank McCourt was more engaged as owner these days… " I told Torre, but he interrupted.

The firestorm that erupted last July when Chicago owner Jerry Reinsdorf was perceived to have waived a white flag over the White Sox has receded some. Which is not to say that some Sox aren't still pained when they think of the decision to trade Wilson Alvarez and Roberto Hernandez with the team only 3 1/2 games behind the Cleveland Indians in the American League Central.
