The NCAA is investigating an allegation that Miami University basketball Coach Jerry Peirson gave one of his players an A in a course even though the student failed to attend class or perform class work. Miami of Ohio announced the investigation today, saying the incident is alleged to have occurred during the fall semester of the 1988-89 school year, when Peirson was teaching a physical education course titled Basketball Theory.

Miami of Ohio announced today that it has appointed Joby Wright, a 10-year assistant coach under Bob Knight at Indiana, to be Miami's new basketball coach. Wright, who turned 40 on Wednesday, replaces Jerry Peirson, who was fired Aug. 3 after he admitted that he gave a player a false grade. Wright played for Indiana and was chosen captain of the Hoosiers and all-Big Ten in 1972. He holds two degrees from Indiana.

Miami University of Ohio fired its men's basketball coach today for giving one of his players a false grade in a class. Miami President Paul Pearson said the university, based in nearby Oxford, Ohio, dismissed Coach Jerry Peirson for giving a former Miami player an A in Peirson's "Basketball Theory" course, even though the player never attended class or did any course work. Johnny Orr and Bill Frieder have their wish -- each other. Coach Orr's Iowa State team and Coach Frieder's Michigan team will play Sunday to determine which advances to next week's NCAA Midwest Regional at Kansas City. Both earned a second-round match with tougher-than-expected first-round victories Friday. Iowa State bumped Miami of Ohio 81-79 in overtime on Jeff Hornacek's 26-foot whirl-and-drill shot just before the buzzer.

Almost two-thirds of the athletes chosen in the pro football and basketball drafts this year failed to get their college degrees. An Associated Press survey shows that of the 385 players selected in the two drafts, 232--or 64.1%--did not graduate, many dropping out of school just shy of graduation to pursue a pro career. The status of 21 football players could not be determined because their schools would not release graduation data for privacy reasons.
