Jerry Pimm, the winningest coach in UC Santa Barbara history, is stepping down and will move into the school's athletic administration office as an assistant to Athletic Director Gary Cunningham. Pimm's team takes a 4-11 Big West Conference record and 7-18 overall mark into tonight's regular-season finale against Cal State Fullerton. The Gauchos, who have lost seven games in a row, are assured of the poorest record in Pimm's tenure as coach.

Tuesday night's game between USC and Santa Barbara was their first meeting since the 1968-69 season and it marked a homecoming for Gaucho Coach Jerry Pimm. A standout USC player from 1958 to 1960, Pimm said he was also the first coach to take a Trojan team into the Sports Arena. "I was the freshmen coach for the Trojans in 1960," Pimm, 59, said. "We only had one scholarship player at that time but we were thrilled to be playing here."

Although the death of Loyola Marymount star Hank Gathers had UC Santa Barbara Coach Jerry Pimm expressing shock and sadness, it also had Pimm recalling his team's game against Loyola Dec. 9. During that game, a 104-101 Loyola victory in the Lions' Gersten Pavilion, Gathers collapsed in much the same way he did shortly before his death Sunday in a West Coast Conference tournament game against Portland in the same arena.

The names he knew. Putting the correct faces with them, well, that's another story. It seemed as though everywhere Jerry Pimm looked at the Thunderdome arena in October, someone unfamiliar to him looked back. That's not a problem on the street, but wondering who everyone is can sure slow down a basketball practice. Especially when you're the coach. Pimm, UC Santa Barbara's coach, began the season with a revamped squad and lots of questions.

Are the players on the University of Nevada Las Vegas basketball team really a group of decathletes who train by shooting jump shots? Of course not, but maybe they should be. When a group of college coaches were asked to discuss ninth-ranked UNLV, the conversation invariably centered on the athletic abilities of the Rebel players. Usually, basketball coaches discuss zone defenses, offensive matchups and controlling the boards.

Five years ago, shortly after he became UC Santa Barbara's basketball coach, Jerry Pimm stood on the court in the school's 6,000-seat Campus Events Center, looked around and said, "We're going to have to expand this place in a few years." The people who had lured Pimm away from Utah to revive their once-proud basketball program must have had to swallow a laugh. After all, they were hoping for a few victories, not miracles.
