Some might consider it arcane that tape-recorded thunderstorms act as an aphrodisiac for the Majorcan toad. But not Quentin Bloxam. Nor, one assumes, the toads. Bloxam is a senior curator at the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust, better known locally as, simply, the Jersey Zoo, and he's spent 25 years learning the amorous secrets of some of nature's more obscure creatures. Naturalist and wildlife writer Gerald Durrell died Monday on the Channel Island of Jersey, where he founded a zoo dedicated to preserving endangered species. He was 70. Durrell, author of "My Family and Other Animals" and "The Overloaded Ark," had a liver transplant last year and never fully recovered, said Simon Hicks, secretary of the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust. Durrell's engaging humor made him one of the most popular authors of animal stories.

It was meant to be a day trip--just a short, half-hour flight southwest from London to have a look at Jersey, the tiny island in Great Britain's Channel Island chain after which the state of New Jersey is named. But this 45-square-mile dot in the English Channel has a way of holding your attention. Although my group was moving on to Glasgow after our overnight stay on the island, I decided to remain on Jersey and catch up with them later back on the mainland.
