Members of the City Council and trustees of the Capistrano Unified School District will preside over a dedication ceremony today celebrating the completion of a new gymnasium at Capistrano Valley High School. The 2,000-seat gymnasium, which district officials describe as a "premier athletic facility," is a joint venture between the city and the school district, made possible through a special redevelopment agreement.

Five Capistrano Valley High School students and their teacher were awarded a trip to Moscow this week after being one of four Southern California teams to win the Ambassadors to Europe Competition. The students made up one of 12 teams chosen from among an original field of hundreds of schools to compete in the finals of the event, which tested the students on their knowledge of European history in an oral competition. Capistrano Valley was the only Orange County school to qualify for the finals.

For one Capistrano Valley High School graduating senior, a Tuesday night party turned abruptly into Wednesday morning's tragedy. Just hours after graduating with several hundred of his fellow students and friends, Mark Alan Wilson, 17, was killed when he lost control of his Volkswagen Beetle on Santiago Canyon Road and crashed. Wilson had apparently just left the festive, all-night Grad Night party in the school's gym about 5:20 a.m.

Five months after their school opened with much fanfare the nation's first high school fast food court, students at Capistrano Valley High School still complain a lot about lunch. The Taco Bell tacos need more sour cream. The pizza from Pizza Hut is much too greasy. And the chicken nuggets from Kentucky Fried Chicken just aren't all that appealing. But the number of students buying such items tends to belie those claims.
