The "American Idol" voters finally had enough of Paul Jolley. No sooner had Jolley been informed that a town in Tennessee had named a day (last Saturday, March 16 -- so I guess he missed it?) after him, than he got word he'd landed in the bottom three. He was soon joined there by Devin Velez and (sadly) Amber Holcomb. But the latter two soon discovered they had survived to sing another week: It was Jolley who had come in dead last -- ending the long run of white-guy "Idol" winners. He sang for the save, though he couldn't have thought the judges, who hadn't been digging him for weeks, and in fact, back in Hollywood, almost didn't put him through to Las Vegas, would use their one and only save of the season on him. The four people who held his fate in their hands tried to make it look like they were deliberating.

For those following “American Idol,” most of the focus has shifted toward incendiary headlines on sagging ratings, bitter rivalries and the likely mass exodus of the judges panel. It's a shame, really, considering the aging competition has delivered one of its best seasons - as far as talent is concerned. Thursday's finale is the sort of face-off “Idol” has only seen one other time in its more than 10-year run: a diva vs. diva showdown.  Season 12 will either go to Kree Harrison, the country songbird, or Candice Glover, the R&B-soul diva with the voice.

EAST OROSI, Calif. - This was to be the first year Jessica Sanchez was in charge of Thanksgiving dinner. She began preparations Wednesday, crossing through her family's small kitchen to a bottled water dispenser in the living room and filling a pan to wash the turkey. She couldn't use the tap water because East Orosi is one of many Central Valley farm communities where the supply is tainted - by nitrates, arsenic or bacteria traced to decades of agricultural runoff. Jessica's mother, Bertha Diaz, makes about $7.50 an hour picking grapefruit and lemons in the winter, grapes and blackberries in the summer. The cost of the tap water they use for bathing and gardening, plus the bottled water for drinking and cooking, is about 30% of her income.

The life cycle of the latest "American Idol" reached its conclusion Monday night with its annual "Idols Live" concert, a smorgasbord of performances from the season's top 10 contestants. Two years ago the concert was held in the Staples Center, but this year it was back at the cozier confines of the Nokia Theatre. Did the show measure up to the pomp and pageantry of "American Idol's" televised run? We sent two writers who co-led our "Idol" versus "The Voice" coverage to find out. Todd Martens : "American Idol" publicists said there were no review tickets given to the media for this show.

A mother angry that an air conditioner fell out of her fifth-story window threw her 2-year-old daughter out after it, killing the girl, police said today. Jessica Sanchez told police that her daughter Rachel tumbled out accidentally after the air conditioner fell Wednesday. But detectives did not believe her, and she was charged Thursday with murder. Sanchez, 29, and her husband, Thomas, 33, were also charged with endangering the welfare of the child because two other children, ages 1 and 3, showed signs of abuse, police said.

"American Idol"continued to suffer a ratings drop as it headed into its season finale Wednesday night and prepared to crown either Phillip Phillips or Jessica Sanchez the winner. According to preliminary ratings, the Tuesday night episode of the Fox show drew 14.3 million viewers. That was enough for an easy win, and the show also was first in the advertiser-coveted demographic of adults ages 18 to 49. "American Idol's" overall numbers, however, are inching downward. Last season, "American Idol" averaged almost 25 million viewers; this season is typically attracting around 19 million, according to Nielsen.
