An independent investor group bid to buy Trans World Airlines Inc. for substantially more cash than American Airlines parent AMR Corp. offered for the bankrupt carrier. St. Louis-based TWA, the No. 8 U.S. airline, said Jet Acquisitions Group offered $889 million, compared with the $500 million offer from American. Jet Acquisitions was previously described by a spokesman as a group of "aviation experts and major investors" but has kept the identities of its members secret.

An independent group of investors said it plans to bid nearly$1 billion for Trans World Airlines, which is already the target of a bid by American Airlines. The newly formed Jet Acquisitions Group Inc. said it wants to preserve TWA as an independent airline. The group said it will propose the elimination of current debt, retention of current employees, modernization of facilities and substantial expansion.

Lawyers for Trans World Airlines Inc. received an offer Monday from a group backed by former owner Carl Icahn but said a bid submitted by AMR Corp.'s American Airlines is the only "competing and conforming" proposal for the airline. TWA's attorneys, who began an auction of the carrier's assets Monday in New York, said they would look at and consider the other bids before making a recommendation to the court, however.
