The do-it-yourself trend has taken off recently, helped by the popularity of such sites as Pinterest and Etsy that showcase people's personal crafting projects. Start-up Darby Smart is capitalizing on that and this summer launched a website to sell simple DIY kits for at-home projects including feather-topped drink stirrers, '20s-inspired headbands and monogrammed tote bags. The San Francisco company works with designers to create the crafting kits, which come with materials such as paint and glue, as well as instructions.

PARIS -- The gilded interior of Le Grand Hotel was covered with spare, white walls for the spring 2014 Balmain show on Thursday afternoon at Paris Fashion Week, suggesting designer Olivier Rousteing might be planning to pare down the brand's ornamental style and take it in a new direction. The look: A slightly sportier, 1990s-era feel, but still weighed down with a pirate's booty-worth of gilt. Key pieces: Quilted denim bomber jackets with gold button details, some with gold chain details woven through.

It's a pretty good bet that when stars arrive on the Oscar red carpet Sunday they'll be wearing clothes, jewelry and accessories selected with the help of a fashion stylist. And fans are more aware than ever that their idols don't create their looks alone. It's been only half a decade since celebrity stylists really began stepping out from behind the camera to claim a piece of the spotlight generally reserved for their clients. In the short time since Rachel Zoe first appeared in her own docudrama on Bravo in 2008 and her former assistant Brad Goreski splintered off from Team Zoe to star in his own series, a slew of other stylists have launched clothing lines and major collaborations, establishing that the age of the celebrity stylist-as-brand is here to stay.
