Near the end of Monday's Southern Section football luncheon, Trabuco Hills running back Jeff Clayton was ready to dig into his dessert--a bowl of vanilla ice cream--when he paused and looked across the table at his coach, Jim Barnett. "Is it OK, coach?" Clayton asked. Barnett nodded and smiled. Barnett has been after his 5-foot-10, 195-pound running back about his diet lately. "I caught him earlier eating some gummy bears," Barnett said.

Jim Barnett, football coach at Trabuco Hills High School, said Monday that he has turned down an offer to coach football at Big Sky High School in Missoula, Mont. Barnett, who has been coach at Trabuco Hills since the school opened in 1985, was offered a contract by Big Sky last week after his hiring was approved by the district school board. "I had an opportunity, but it would have meant giving up everything I had worked for here," Barnett said.

Jim Barnett, who started the Trabuco Hills football program and within four years turned it into a power, has resigned as coach, Principal George Diedrich said Thursday. Barnett said part of the reason he resigned was his concern that Trabuco Hills could not remain competitive in Division I. The Mustangs joined the South Coast League this season after eight seasons in the Pacific Coast League, a Division VIII league.

Jim Barnett is working the room. Hold on to your wallets. As postgame parties go, this one's a bit mild. A lot of glad-handing and back-patting for the coach who guided little Trabuco Hills to a 23-12 victory over Division I heavy Esperanza. Not a hint of surprise from the gang as Barnett schmoozes. They know anything can happen when he's around and usually does. Friday was just another round of nothing-up-my-sleeve.

In regard to Assemblyman Tom McClintock's stand on carpool lanes ("McClintock Drives Home His Objections at Carpool Dedication," March 14): I'm glad at least one of our elected persons has some sense. He is correct in stating that carpool lanes don't encourage car-pooling. People will carpool when possible without being forced to. Taxpayers paid for all of the road; we should be able to use all of the road. JIM BARNETT Sun Valley
