As liquor sales boom, Beam Inc. is expanding its spirits empire, paying $605 million in cash to buy the Pinnacle Vodka and Calico Jack rum brands from White Rock Distilleries. Beam's long list of products already include Jim Beam and Maker's Mark bourbon, Courvoisier cognac, Canadian Club whiskey and Skinnygirl Cocktails (which saw a 388% boom in volume sales last year, according to research group Technomic). What it doesn't have are vodka flavors such as Atomic Hots, Cake, Gummy and Whipped Cream.

Japan's Suntory Holdings Ltd. has agreed to purchase the American liquor company behind Jim Beam bourbon for $16 billion, a splash that forms a global liquor giant. Suntory said Monday it will pay $83.50 per share for Beam Inc., a 25% premium over Friday's closing price. Beam's shares shot up Monday.  Founded in Osaka in 1899, the prominent Japanese beverage company has looked overseas for growth in recent years, acquiring New Zealand-based Frucor Group and France's Orangina Schweppes Group in 2009.

Wearing a crisp white shirt and wielding an ice pick, he carves a perfectly round ice cube the size of a grapefruit, then snaps and it magically turns into crushed ice. He says four words in the 17-second spot: "Cool bourbon. Jim Beam. " [via Daily Mail ] "I love that the size of my ass is trending worldwide!" posts Boy George to Twitter . The 51-year-old British singer has been shedding pounds, and his dramatic weight loss has captured media attention, at least partly because he regularly tweets about his diet.

Four geldings will get a chance at Turfway Park today to earn a start in the Kentucky Derby, a race a gelding hasn't won since 1929. Two of them, Polar Expedition and Powis Castle, are the second and third morning-line betting choices, respectively, for the 1 1/8-mile Jim Beam. The Jim Beam Stakes, a preparatory event for the Kentucky Derby, will have a 1987 purse of $500,000, which is $150,000 greater than last year's prize money for the race. The event will continue at Turfway Park, which formerly was known as Latonia Race Course. Nearly all of the fish in a creek near a whiskey warehouse in Bardstown have died since fire destroyed the building and spilled its contents last week, and state officials have cited owner Jim Beam. Lightning set the warehouse on fire Aug. 4, and more than 800,000 gallons of burning bourbon flowed into the creek. State officials were investigating whether bourbon is also to blame for a larger fish kill in the Salt River.

A woman who says drinking during pregnancy caused birth defects in her son is suing the maker of Jim Beam bourbon for not putting warning labels on its bottles. Jury selection in the lawsuit filed by Candace and Harold Thorp began today in federal court. The couple's 4-year-old son, Michael, was born mentally retarded, neurologically impaired and developmentally stunted, with facial and other body malformations, according to the lawsuit. The Thorps sued the James B. Beam Distillery Co. of Deerfield, Ill., claiming it should have provided labels warning that alcohol could cause birth defects.

Frederick Booker Noe II, 74, a former master distiller of Jim Beam, died Tuesday of complications from diabetes in Bardstown, Ky. Noe , a member of the sixth generation of the Beam family involved in making the bourbon, died at his home after an extended illness, according to a statement from Jim Beam Brands Co. Born in Springfield, Ky., Noe was a standout football player in prep school and attended the University of Kentucky. He entered the family business in 1950 as an assistant distiller.

When rating the Santa Anita Derby with the Jim Beam Stakes as a recent successful prep for the Triple Crown, the comparison isn't even close. Since 1990, the Jim Beam wins, five Triple Crown victories to one. The last four winners of the Beam have all won Triple Crown races, with Summer Squall taking the Preakness in 1990, Hansel winning the Preakness and Belmont Stakes in 1991, Lil E. Tee capturing the Kentucky Derby in 1992 and Prairie Bayou winning the Preakness last year.

A federal jury on Wednesday cleared Jim Beam Brands Co. of negligence for not stating on its whiskey labels that alcohol consumption by pregnant women could cause birth defects in their children. Harold and Candance Thorp of Seattle were seeking about $4 million in damages for lifetime assistance for their son, Michael, 4, whose retardation, physical deformities and other problems were blamed on fetal alcohol syndrome. Mrs. Thorp, 39, testified that she was an alcoholic who drank as much as half a fifth of Jim Beam a day, but she and her husband insisted that she would have stopped drinking had the bottle labels carried a warning for pregnant women.
