Cal State Fullerton, which recently put together a 14-game winning streak, is now on a two-game losing streak and in search of an offense after a 5-1 loss Tuesday at Pepperdine. Steve Duda (6-3) had a career-high 11 strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings against the Titans, who are ranked No. 3 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball. Pepperdine (23-12) is ranked 16th in the poll. Fullerton (22-9) scored its run in the ninth. Bret Hemphill had an RBI single with two outs and the bases loaded.

Jim Betzsold's final college baseball season was bittersweet. Betzsold was happy to be part of Cal State Fullerton's highly successful season: a share of the Big West championship, an NCAA regional title and a semifinal berth in the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. His disappointment was in not being a bigger part of it. Betzsold started in 36 of the team's 63 games, platooning with two promising freshmen, Jeremy Giambi and Mark Kotsay.

Stanford built a 7-3 lead and then survived a Fullerton rally in the top of the ninth for a 7-6 college baseball victory Saturday at Stanford. Jeff Ferguson hit a two-out, three-run homer to rally the Titans within one, but they were unable to score the tying run. Craig Skyberg was two for four and scored two runs for the Titans (1-1), and Jim Betzsold and Bret Hemphill each hit home runs. Chad Rolish took the loss.

Irvine High School stole 10 bases while defeating Woodbridge, 10-5, in the Irvine Baseball Assn. tournament Thursday at UC Irvine. Mike Booker went three for five with three runs batted in and four stolen bases for Irvine. Winning pitcher Mike Seal struck out five in five innings and added two hits and an RBI. Scott Brandino was two for five with two RBIs. In another game Thursday, Mater Dei scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat Servite, 8-6.

Nine Orange County prep baseball players have been selected to play for the South team that will participate in the California State all-star game scheduled at 7:30 tonight in San Jose Municipal Stadium.

Despite four home runs in the fifth inning, the South lost to the North, 8-7, in the California state all-star baseball game Friday at San Jose Municipal Stadium. Jim Betzsold of Mater Dei singled to start the fifth, and after a walk, James Eidam of Edison hit a three-run home run to tie it, 3-3. Lionel Hastings of Mater Dei, Darvin Taylor of Riverside Poly and Lance Marks of Dana Hills hit solo home runs in the inning and the South took a 6-3 lead.

Dante Powell's offense again led the Cal State Fullerton baseball team as the Titans beat UCLA, 10-2, Wednesday at Titan Field. Powell was three for five, including a two-run homer in the seventh inning. He also had four runs batted in, a double and two scored runs. Adam Millan and Jim Betzsold both had doubles for the Titans. Winning pitcher Mike Parisi (10-3) went five innings, striking out five, before Derek Fahs came on in relief.

Dante Powell drove in six runs and three pitchers combined on a two-hitter as Cal State Fullerton beat UC Riverside, 12-1, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Titan Field. It was the home opener for Cal State Fullerton (3-1), ranked sixth in the nation by Baseball America. Powell had a two-run double and Jim Betzsold had a two-run homer as Fullerton scored six runs in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Powell added a three-run homer in the seventh, when the Titans took an 11-1 lead.

Jim Betzsold homered and Jeff Ferguson had a three-run double as Cal State Fullerton defeated USC, 9-3, in a nonconference baseball game at USC Tuesday night. The Titans, who are 16-7 and ranked eighth in the nation, broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the third inning. Ferguson's double was the big blow. Freshman pitcher Jon Ward of Huntington Beach went 5 1/3 innings for the Titans to post his first collegiate victory. USC, ranked 11th nationally, fell to 16-13.

Adam Millan, D.C. Olsen and Jim Betzsold homered to lead a 15-hit attack as the Titans defeated UCLA, 7-6, in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles. Dan Ricabal earned the victory, his ninth, in relief and Ted Silva earned his sixth save for the Titans (30-12), ranked seventh in the nation by Collegiate Baseball. Ryan McGuire hit his 18th home run of the season for the Bruins (23-17), who led 6-1 after three innings.
