If UCLA offensive line coach Jim Colletto were still working in the NFL and his team had the kind of problems running the ball that the Bruins have had, he would fix it the old-school way -- with more work. But the NCAA limits personal contact between college coaches and players during the week and that has been somewhat frustrating for Colletto, who has coached in college and the NFL for 39 years.

In the wake of Thursday's Rose Bowl game, there will be many who say that Bo Schembechler was outcoached by John Cooper. There will also be a few, those with an eye for history, who say that Schembechler was outcoached by Jim Colletto. Jim who? Colletto is the offensive coordinator at Arizona State. He is the man that Cooper, ASU's coach, has placed in charge of devising ways to move the football and score points. Colletto is also becoming a thorn in the side of Schembechler.

In only its second year of Division I-A, the independent Golden Knights took Ole Miss to overtime in Week 1 and dropped a 33-31 heartbreaker to South Carolina. With Dan Marino on the skids, Central Florida's Daunte Culpepper might be the best quarterback in the state. 2. Can you believe it?

A Purdue University search committee today interviewed Jim Colletto, offensive coordinator at Ohio State, but gave no indication when a selection of a successor to football Coach Fred Akers will be made. The nine-member committee earlier interviewed Ball State head Coach Paul Schudel.

Tom Freeman, a former assistant coach at San Diego State and San Diego City College, was hired as offensive line coach at Purdue. Freeman, 45, was an assistant at Arizona State the past eight years, including 1985-87 when Purdue Coach Jim Colletto was also a Sun Devil assistant. "Our philosophies are an easy match," Colletto said. "We know how each other works. We will have an easy mesh of job responsibilities.
