After listening to the nasty attacks of Gingrich, Dole, Wilson, Gramm et al., I finally figured out what GOP stands for: the Grouchy Old Party. JIM MALLON San Luis Obispo

Re "Gravity May Lose Its Pull," Column One, Dec. 21: Just as some say with evolution, it's time we acknowledge that gravity is simply a theory. That being the case, I propose we either stop teaching about the so-called force of gravity in the schools or offer students alternative explanations to how we stay firmly planted on Earth. There are other possibilities. Personally, I keep a 3-pound rock in each back pocket. Jim Mallon San Luis Obispo

Forgive me for dredging up old memories, but Peyton Manning is looking more like Jim Everett every week. As soon as the pocket collapses, it's Headlight Eyes, Twinkle Toes, Happy Feet and INT. Jim Mallon San Luis Obispo

If no one else will say it, I will: Magic, will you please just go away? Retired/unretired, coaching/not coaching, may come back/not coming back. . . . Enough! JIM MALLON San Luis Obispo

I see where Magic Johnson is talking comeback again. If the guy really needs to see his name in the paper that badly, why doesn't he just write a letter, like I do. JIM MALLON Morro Bay

Lisa Dillman refers to the proposed tennis grudge match between John McEnroe and Jeff Turnago as "the battle of the psyches." Wouldn't said contest more aptly be called "the battle of the 'psychos'?" JIM MALLON San Luis Obispo

So, what's the statute of limitations on a funny idea? It appears that Hilburn-o-Matic author Scott Chernoff, much like Robert Hilburn himself, comes up a little short in the originality department (Letters, Nov. 17). As creators of the "Mad-Lib" printed on this very page in February of 1993, Bob Guilfoyle and I proudly take credit for being the first to skewer in this fashion. "Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie" is based on a concept so simple and obvious cynics everywhere must be kicking themselves for not thinking of it themselves: Take a minor motion picture of questionable artistic merit and have a trio of kibitzers supplement the soundtrack with a stream of wicked wisecracks. For the last seven years those exceptional jibes have been the exclusive property of the cable TV show known to fans as "MST3K."

I finally figured out the difference between a Stanley Cup contender and the Kings. The Detroit Red Wings, possibly the most talented team in the NHL, improved themselves before this season by signing Mike Vernon, who is now kicking butt in the playoffs. The Kings traded away a large chunk of their future on Grant Fuhr, who is now kicking back during the playoffs. JIM MALLON San Luis Obispo I wonder if Mike Keenan will go back to the Rangers now that St. Louis couldn't buy him a Stanley Cup. JOE MACRAIO Rancho Cucamonga
