The UC Irvine men's swimming team defeated Pomona-Pitzer, 149-62, in its last meet of the season at Irvine. The Anteaters (6-4) were led by senior John Morgan, who won the 200-meter butterfly (2 minutes 7.24 seconds) and the 1,000 freestyle (10:11.98). Teammate Mauro Macchi, a sophomore, won the 100 free (49.27) and took second in the 50 free (22.44). UCI senior Jim Martin took second in the 500 free (5:09.86) and third in the 1,000 free (10.41.30).

Administrators at two Thousand Oaks high schools who were directed to switch jobs in September were granted a temporary reprieve Friday after a flood of community opposition to the move. The transfers of Thousand Oaks High School Assistant Principal Anna Merriman and Westlake High School Assistant Principal Jim Martin will be delayed until the December winter vacation, Conejo Valley Unified School District Supt. Jerry C. Gross said.

He wasn't the Fifth Horseman, or the Springfield Rifle or the Golden Boy or Six-Yard Sitko or One-Play O'Brien or even Jumpin' Joe. Opposition tackles and ends had plenty of names for him, but you couldn't put them on bubble-gum cards. Look at it this way: The Notre Dame teams of the late 1940s were probably the greatest college football teams ever assembled.

Jim Martin has joined Independence One Bank of California in Mission Viejo as first vice president of the corporate banking division. He was previously vice president of commercial and corporate lending at Union Bank in Irvine. Before that, Martin was with Security Pacific National Bank.

President-elect Barack Obama has waded into Georgia's U.S. Senate runoff, recording a radio ad supporting Democrat Jim Martin, but there's still no word on whether the president-elect will make a personal appearance. In the spot, Obama thanks Georgians who voted for him Nov. 4, then encourages support for Martin. "The elections aren't over," Obama said. "I want to urge you to turn out one more time and help elect Jim Martin to the United States Senate." Martin faces Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss in a Dec. 2 runoff.

Mendocino Wine Pioneer Fired: John Parducci was sacked as general manager of the winery bearing his name by Teachers Management Corp., the Newport Beach investment partnership. Parducci, 76, who sold almost all of his stake in the winery in 1973 when TMI acquired Parducci Wine Cellars, said he was barred from entering the winery. Jim Martin, president of TMI, said Parducci was fired because of his relationship with personnel at the facility.

Marines and farmers joined firefighters to contain a 10-mile-wide inferno raging on the North Carolina coast as Gov. Jim Martin declared 34 counties a disaster area. Martin asked President Reagan for federal aid to cope with the fires which have destroyed 74 homes and blackened 119,000 acres of forest, causing $51-million damage. At dawn, 140 Marines joined rangers, farmers and volunteer firefighters and started flooding fields to combat stubborn underground peat fires.
