Kent Steffes grew up idolizing Jim Menges, and for two summers watched Menges and Greg Lee dominate the pro beach volleyball tour. Fresh off outstanding athletic careers at UCLA, Menges and Lee won a record 13 consecutive tournaments in 1975-76, a streak few figured would be matched. Then along came two other former Bruins--Steffes and San Clemente's Karch Kiraly.

To the average sports fan, it's not exactly Koufax and Drysdale returning to Chavez Ravine. But on the beach, the names Selznick and Vogelsang and Von Hagen and Menges also conjure visions of heroic summers long ago. They played volleyball. They were kings of the beach before the tour went pro and the "beach" was extended to Phoenix and Milwaukee and Boulder, Colo. Before light beer and cable television.

Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes defeated Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos, 15-11, in the championship match of the Pro Beach Volleyball Miller Lite Open at Cleveland. It was the 13th consecutive victory for Kiraly and Steffes, which ties the record for consecutive victories, set by Greg Lee and Jim Menges in 1975-76. Steffes has been in 19 of 20 finals and has 16 victories, which ties the season record set by Smith and Stoklos in 1987.

San Clemente's Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes of Pacific Palisades won their 12th consecutive Assn. of Volleyball Professionals' beach tournament Sunday, defeating San Clemente's Larry Mear and Huntington Beach's Eric Wurts, 15-5, in the finals of the Milwaukee Open. Kiraly and Steffes, who set the single-season consecutive winning streak of 11 last week, can tie the all-time record next week at the Cleveland Open. Jim Menges and Greg Lee set the all-time record in the 1975-76 seasons.

Two of the hottest teams in pro beach volleyball cruised through their opening-round matches Saturday in the $60,000 Manhattan Beach Open. Two-time Olympic gold medalist Karch Kiraly and partner Brent Frohoff lost only 10 points in their four matches, and defeated Scott Ayakatubby and Wally Goodrick, 15-3, to reach this morning's semifinals. Top-seeded Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos also advanced to the semifinals, beating Leif Hanson and Eric Wurts, 15-5.

Kent Steffes and Karch Kiraly are now both lucky and good. They won the Manhattan Beach Open with a 1-0, double-final victory over Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos on Sunday at the Manhattan Beach Pier. The double-final, which was played to three points or until one minute elapsed on the rally clock, was necessary because Smith and Stoklos, coming out of the losers' bracket, beat top-seeded Kiraly and Steffes, 11-10, in the main final.

There were no surprises on the first day of the Off Shore Manhattan Beach Open volleyball tournament. The top eight seeded teams advanced to today's quarterfinals, which begin at 9 a.m., adjacent to the Manhattan Beach Pier. The top-seeded team of Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos cruised through its first two rounds Friday, 15-0 and 15-8.

Sinjin Smith has won a record 134 pro beach volleyball tournaments, so his 13th-place finish at the Manhattan Beach Open on Saturday was surprising to many. Fifth-seeded Smith and partner Dan Vrebalovich were upset by 29th-seeded Marcelo Duarte and Rob Holdger, 15-12, in a morning consolation bracket match. Smith-Vrebalovich fell into the losers' bracket after losing, 15-6, to 11th-seeded Troy Tanner and Eric Wurts on Friday.

The hopes of Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes winning a record 14th consecutive pro beach volleyball tournament were dealt a serious blow Saturday in the $100,000 Seal Beach Open. Ninth-seeded Scott Friederichsen and Tim Walmer upset top-seeded Kiraly and Steffes, 10-8, in the winners' bracket quarterfinals. Kiraly and Steffes dropped into the losers' bracket of the double-elmination tournament.
