A man was arrested Monday for investigation of rape after forcing a woman to go home with him at gunpoint, police said. Reggie McElroy, 36, allegedly pulled a handgun on his ex-girlfriend in Playa del Rey on Saturday night and forced her to go to his Chatsworth apartment, said Capt. Jim Miller, of the Los Angeles Police Department's Pacific Division. McElroy allegedly kept her there for nearly 24 hours and sexually assaulted her repeatedly, Miller said.

Chicago Bear quarterback Jim Miller played for the Detroit Lions in 1998, and didn't play a single down for the team. So what does he think of Bobby Ross, then the Lions' coach? "Quite frankly, if Bobby Ross was the captain of the Titanic, he'd be the first one in the lifeboat," Miller said. "The guy's a liar and a loser, and that's the way I Iook at him." Aw, come on, Jim, don't sugarcoat it. * Trivia time: When was the last time USC played a football game on Christmas Day?

It was nervous time for the Chicago Bears. It was overtime and Chris Boniol was lining up to try a 36-yard field goal. A week earlier, he missed a 41-yard attempt in overtime that would have given the Bears a victory over Minnesota. But not this time. Boniol's kick 4:58 into the overtime was good and the Bears beat the free-falling San Diego Chargers, 23-20, Sunday.

There's something about Jim Miller that brings out the best in the Chicago Bears. Maybe it's his low-key personality or his blue-collar work ethic. Either way, the Bears seem to win when he's in a game. Miller came on for injured Shane Matthews to throw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes, with Marcus Robinson capping the comeback with a leaping 24-yard touchdown catch Sunday as the Bears beat the Minnesota Vikings, 17-10.

Two names Michigan State quarterback Jim Miller doesn't want to hear if the Rams keep their fifth overall choice in Sunday's NFL draft: Heath Shuler and Trent Dilfer. Miller knows the Rams are interested in him, but he won't know how much until they announce their first-round selection in New York City. Miller, whom the Rams rank third among quarterbacks behind Dilfer and Shuler, will patiently wait at his parents' home in Waterford, Mich.

Trombonist Jim Miller still remembers what it felt like in 1953 to be 18 years old and a new member of the Dorsey brothers band. "I'd already been in Les Elgart's band, and I thought I was the hottest thing since sliced bread," the current director of the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra said by phone from his home in Daytona Beach, Fla. "Then I sat next to Tommy [Dorsey] in the trombone section, and I realized I knew nothing about the horn."
