The trickle-down from the Pac-12 Conference's new television deal is already being felt at UCLA, which has invested heavily in a football staff. Head coach Jim Mora received a five-year, $11.235-million deal. Rick Neuheisel, fired in December, received a five-year, $6.25-million contract in 2008. Athletic department officials expect to take in $17.6 million this year from television contracts, multimedia rights and apparel sales. The Pac-12 agreed to a $3-billion television deal with Fox and ESPN.

There are two ways to look at UCLA's spring game. There's the cleats-on-the-ground view: "We need to make sure we lock into everything," safety Anthony Jefferson said. "We need to make sure we're assignment perfect. " And there's a coach's big-canvas brush strokes: "I wouldn't put stock at all in the results of a spring game, who plays well and who doesn't," Coach Jim Mora said. "It's just a piece to the puzzle. " The Bruins wrap up spring practice with a scrimmage at the StubHub Center on Saturday at 5 p.m. Mora said he wanted a "real game" and divided the teams along traditional lines - first-team offense against first-team defense, second-team offense against second-team defense.

It was '70s night for UCLA as the Bruins opened the Jim Mora era with a 49-24 victory over Rice on Thursday night in Houston. In this case, '70s not meaning a throwback game as much as a ... There goes Brett Hundley on a 72-yard touchdown run. And, there goes Johnathan Franklin on a 74-yard touchdown run. Which was followed by, Franklin busting loose again on a 78-yard touchdown run. And that was just in the first half. Franklin, a senior, rushed for 214 yards and three touchdowns in 15 carries as the Bruins rolled up 618 yards in offense.

UCLA football Coach Jim Mora wants to have a “real game” when the Bruins have their annual spring showcase for fans at StubHub Center in Carson on Saturday night. To ensure that can happen, he's prioritizing health this week. The Bruins did not wear pads during Monday night's practice. “My goal is to get a lot of great work done this week and stay healthy so that we can have a real game on Saturday night,” Mora said. Currently, the Bruins have nine healthy offensive linemen, Mora said.

It was cooler for UCLA's football team at Cal State San Bernardino Wednesday — if you're talking about the weather. Tempers, on the other hand, simmered, boiled, then exploded. Near the end of the evening practice, Coach Jim Mora threw the Bruins off the practice field after a tirade about effort, discipline and mediocre football. Pushed over the edge, Mora essentially threw the players over the wall. He blistered the team for a few minutes, then barked that bed check was at 10:45 p.m. and practice at 8 a.m. Thursday.

Triage with UCLA Coach Jim Mora. UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley suffered an injured right ankle during the Bruins' 36-30 victory over 16 th -ranked Nebraska on Saturday. He left the game briefly, then returned. He was limping considerably at the end. Hundley's status update Sunday: “He's good,” Mora said. Hundley's status update Monday: “He's fine,” Mora said. Is that an upgrade? "He's good,” Mora said. A downgrade? “He's good and fine,” Mora said.

The upbeat spring practice that first-year UCLA Coach Jim Mora was enjoying was significantly marred Wednesday by the death of former NFL linebacker Junior Seau. Mora, an assistant with the San Diego Chargers from 1985 to 1991, coached Seau for two seasons and was shocked by the news of his apparent suicide. “He loved life and had a tremendous impact on the young people that he touched through his work in the community,” Mora said. “My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and his beautiful children.” PHOTOS: Junior Seau | 1969 - 2012  Seau played for the Chargers from 1990 to 2002 and spent a total of 20 seasons in the NFL. “I had the honor of coaching Junior when he first came into the league and from Day 1 his passion for the game was infectious,” Mora said.

Our local leather-heads are off to rough training camp starts. The players are holding up fine under barometric pressures in oppressive heat - the problem is at the leadership level. Fresh-start Jim Mora, looking to change UCLA's cozy-club culture, took his team to swelter box San Bernardino to get away from all the distractions. "No friends, no girlfriends, no parents," Mora said. He should have added "no radio shows. " Mora became the distraction Thursday, a day after going on KLAA-AM (830)

UCLA Coach Jim Mora has stressed "don't listen to the noise" as the way for the Bruins to stay focused. A sign with that phrase hangs in the locker room. But what do you do when it's Mora making the noise? It has been clear to anyone with eyes that Fabien Moreau has developed into a strong cornerback. The only pass play to beat him during practice Saturday was a low, short throw that receiver Devin Lucien needed to dive to catch. Mora needed little nudging to launch into a campaign speech the second he was asked about Moreau.

The scene was part Bolshoi Ballet, part Marx Brothers. Four UCLA running backs lined up yards apart, forming a square. On a signal, they burst forward, dodging each other at the last second. Then another group stepped up and repeated the bit. What looked like an elaborate game of chicken was actually part of a Running Back 101 course led by first-year assistant coach Kennedy Polamalu. "We're trying to get the mental part down," Polamalu said. "… We're on them pretty good.

Torian White's football career at UCLA appears to be over. White, who was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault in November, has not enrolled at UCLA for the spring quarter. The offensive tackle was suspended from the team after his arrest. The case is still being investigated, according to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office. "All I can tell you is he is no longer with the team," Coach Jim Mora said. White started 14 games at left tackle as a redshirt freshman in 2012.

The expectations for UCLA football have not been this lofty, or attainable, in ages. The season maps out in a way in which goals are achievable, whether it's a spot in the four-team national championship playoff or a Saturday in December when quarterback Brett Hundley is photographed clutching the Heisman Trophy. The Bruins open the season in Virginia, giving East Coast folks a look at the team and the star at the controls of its offense. There is a marquee game against Texas at the Dallas Cowboys' stadium.

When UCLA opens spring football practice at the crack of dawn Tuesday - 7 a.m. - the Bruins can be thankful the sun has not set on quarterback Brett Hundley's college career. It makes things a little easier. "You think?" Coach Jim Mora said, laughing. Hundley's decision to put off the NFL draft for another year has UCLA gearing up for a Heisman Trophy campaign rather than a quarterback competition between Jerry Neuheisel and Asiantii Woulard. "Hundley For The Heisman" will be a well-used phrase around Westwood this year.

INDIANAPOLIS - When it comes to the NFL scouting combine, UCLA has done a U-turn. The Bruins, largely irrelevant here for much of the last decade, finally matter again. They have five players at the combine, and while that's two short of USC's contingent, UCLA has the region's most coveted player in linebacker Anthony Barr, a potential top-10 pick, and one of the event's best interior offensive linemen in guard Xavier Su'a-Filo. Also being put through the paces at Lucas Oil Stadium are Bruins receiver Shaq Evans, defensive end Cassius Marsh and linebacker Jordan Zumwalt, all of whom figure to be selected in the seven rounds of May's draft.

Jim Mora begins his first practice as UCLA's football coach today on the verge of becoming the highest-paid coach in school history. UCLA athletic department officials have told the University of California Board of Regents they anticipate generating about $17.6 million in revenues this year from television, multi-media, apparel and other products. A chunk of that will be spent on football coaches, according to requests made to the board by UCLA Chancellor Gene Block in January and March.

UCLA Coach Jim Mora said Tuesday that a "few" Penn State players have contacted the school, though he would not specify which ones. In the wake of NCAA sanctions, Penn State players are eligible to play for another school without sitting out a year. "I think we have to proceed with haste and caution at the same time," Mora said. "We don't have a lot of familiarity with a lot of their players. We went through their roster, and so many of them are from Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

UCLA is certainly Jim Mora's team. His third - and arguably least successful - recruiting day came and went. The players he recruited now outnumber the ones he inherited - although quarterback Brett Hundley is a handy guy to still have around. So where the Bruins are now headed has Mora's coaching DNA. "We talked last year about consistency," Mora said. "Now I'm looking to go win some games that people don't think we can win on a more consistent basis. I don't want to make excuses about going to Stanford and losing or going to Oregon and losing.
